This is one of three ABQ Journal articles (with lots of photos) detailing problems with illegals and drug runners at the Mexico/New Mexico border. Links to the others are below:
Tracking shadows in New Mexicos Bootheel
At the FOB, several agents have just finished a shift and are shooting the breeze around a table. They answer a journalists question: What is the biggest misconception the public has about their work?
Really, honestly? They really think that its secure, the border, with what we got, says Agent De La Garza, who declined to give his first name. You need more people. You need more not less. If they think that it is secure, it is not. There is no way. Were doing the best we can, but there is no way.
Rugged terrain, isolation challenge for Border Patrol
Across the Southwest border, illegal immigration is off sharply from its peak a decade ago. But some Border Patrol sectors, including the El Paso sector that encompasses New Mexico, have seen apprehensions of migrants notch up over the past two years, driven in part by rising illegal immigration from Central America.
New Mexicos Bootheel has seen that trend.
The number of other than Mexican mostly Guatemalan migrants apprehended in New Mexicos Bootheel alone increased fourfold in the first eight months of the fiscal year to 546, compared with 101 over the same period a year ago the majority of them families with children.
Disgusting.

“You cant put a fence in some of the terrain that is down there.”
Of course we can.
The reason it’s a game of ‘cat and mouse’ is because that IR scope isn’t mounted on a rifle.
PING
I don't see the problem. /s
“You cant put a fence in some of the terrain that is down there.”
Bet we could put in a minefield. Or a shark-filled moat.
These people have no imaginations.
Mortars.
Heavy machineguns.
Armed UAVs.
Lawnmower Man’s turbocharged lawnmower.
When they bunch up like that, they’re just BEGGING to be taken out.
Can’t put a fence there, eh?
How about a large, thick wall? With razor wire on top for good measure.
Maybe one our amigos to the south would pay for.
Years ago I would take my kids 4-wheeling throughout the area. You Used to be able to camp out near Shakespere, Animas or Playas. It was a great experience exploring the area over a long weekend with two adventurous young boys. That was 20+ years ago, I wouldn’t think of it now.
