They can call themselves the 1776 Rebels and use the 13 star Flag? They better hurry, before someone finds that offensive too.

They could change their mascot to James Dean and be rebels without a cause

But when American Indians are used as mascots, according to the folks who hate the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, this supposedly shows contempt for the group “mascotized”. Ergo using the Rebels as a mascot is showing contempt for the Confederacy, and is anti-racist. If not, leave the folks who want to honor the hardihood of North America’s aboriginal population alone and keep all the Indian mascots.

Can their mascot, symbolized by a Civil War-era soldier with a floppy mustache, ever signify something other than a uniformed defender of slavery?

Liberal canard. 8% of the population owned slaves in 1860. Try getting someone to fight for something that they probably will never have. The men of the Confederacy fought for States rights against what was a tyrannical Federal imposition.

Disney might have a few things to say about a possible alternative.

Why not just go for the jugular and tear out all the pages from all the history books from 1860-1865.

Title the black pages as...
“The years that shall not be mentioned.”

“Ye villains, ye Rebels, disperse; Damn you, disperse!”

Americans have always had a rebellious streak.
