Not to diminish your comment because I mostly agree with it, but Harding died after a very short time in office giving us Calvin Coolidge.
Arguably one of the best POTUS this country has ever had.
I have never run into GWB and Laura but I have seen and interacted with the older Bushs several times. At the pizza place, at the grocery store, at the video store, out taking care of things, not sending SS to do it for them.
Of course the SS was close by protecting them, always. In fact that is how you know they are somewhere close, you see a well dress young man or woman with a wire in their ear.
And that is precisely why a Trump/Cruz ticket makes sense. Cruz is brilliant, and can take this country back to its founding principles, but unfortunately there's much work to be done before the country is ready for that. Trump is a consummate celebrity salesman who can connect with ordinary Americans and can make the deal for radical reform to clean out the endemic corruption that's taken over Washington. After eight years of repair work the country should be ready for President Cruz to complete the project.

Jeanne Shaheen was elected in 2008. Revulsion at the catastrophic waste of Iraq was very strong in NH, and her opponent was up Bush's butt. Kelly Ayotte beat an overt communist in 2010.
I don’t think GWB was as bad as you suggest and after 9/11 he kept the homeland pretty safe.
