It's time for someone on TV to step up and take Donald Trump down or, at least, put him in his place.
The situation has not risen to the level of Edward R. Murrow and Sen. Joseph McCarthy. But it's definitely in a league with Katie Couric and Sarah Palin.
And every day that Trump gets away with driving the vast majority of political coverage on network and cable TV with his reckless, tabloid-style attacks and unsubstantiated claims is another day that the nation loses having an informed discussion about where it wants to go in terms of leadership after Barack Obama.
Coarsening the conversation of democracy hardly starts to describe a candidate for president collectively characterizing Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers, or questioning the war record of Sen. John McCain, who spent five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
Compared to those ignorant and ugly acts, Trump calling South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham a "stiff" while giving out his cellphone number seems like mere high school bully-boy stuff. But is this really the tabloid, reality-TV level at which we want our most important civic pageant to play?
Trump drags almost every part of the presidential selection process down to his level. Graham, one of the most thoughtful and civil national leaders I have ever encountered, responded to Trump by calling him a "jackass" and appearing in a video that featured him destroying his cellphone with everything from a meat cleaver to a golf club.
It was kind of pathetic, but what else could Graham do? Trump laughs in the face of civility. He's like McCarthy in that respect.
Two big-name, prime-time TV interviewers had a shot at Trump last week: Bill O'Reilly of Fox News and Anderson Cooper of CNN.

But they’re also like a pack of hyenas. Together they’re formidable, but individually not as effective.
David Zurawak, author of this whiny piece, is a pu**y. He wants someone else to go take on Trump for him because he’s not man enough to do it himself.
Sure, he’s a writer for some socialist rag, but he could get a spot on PMSNBC by offering to take on Trump. But he won’t, because most of all, he’s afraid Trump would accept.
It’s time for someone on TV, print, Hollywood, radio, social media or otherwise to step up and take Hillary Clinton down or, at least, put her in his place.
And I am beginning to believe that is why Trump is unstoppable.
Wherever he goes, he brings the spectacle with him. His presser the other day in Laredo was an absolute spectacle.
He flies in on a massive plane, has an absolutely presidential motorcade, establishes close personal relationships with the mayor and city manager in a matter of minutes (the mayor even patted him on the back and was literally beaming when he spoke).
In terms of charisma, Trump is a lion and all the other candidates (including Hill and Bern) are chihuahuas. Trump is Barnum and Bailey and everyone else is Floyd the Mayberry Barber.
I love Cruz, but he doesn't yet command this kind of excitement...and may never.
She wouldn't want to face Trump in a debate.
He would be merciless.
I am really super curious how the press would currently be reporting on Trump, if all things were totally equal, except he had a (D) after his name
They might have to go to Pravda or ElJezeara (sp) to find one. (sarcasm, I think)
How could Graham possibly know in advance that Trump was going to give out his phone number?
We’re fortunate now that a talking head can’t take down a politician with one show. Nobody should have that sort of power.

Burp ..... barf ..... fart.
Liberals just love the liberal "Republicans."
Can you also link to the David Zurawik column(s) talking about taking down Baltimore’s mayor? And maybe its “state’s attorney?”
They fear the truth.
The BALTIMORE SUN - yearns for civility?
Let’s begin in Baltimore.
They might have to bring back Dan Rather or Brian Williams.
Wow! What a hissy fit!
This little girly-man going on about how undignified Trump has made the presidential race probably did not bat an eye about what the Impeached one did in the Oval Office.
Bingo!
“most important civic pageant”? Civil war, is more like it. This is not an election, it is a war via ballot box. When not settled via the ballot box it will be settled via the cartridge box.
MSM complaining about Trump’s exposing them is like Dracula complaining about lightleaks in his blackout curtains.
