This week a lone shooter stalked into an American cinema and opened fire at random, killing two people and wounding seven before turning the gun on himself. It is the latest in a string of massacres in the United States that has reignited the debate on gun control, with Obama admitting on Thursday that his government has failed to tackle the problem.
"If you look at the number of Americans killed since 9/11 by terrorism, it's less than 100. If you look at the number that have been killed by gun violence, it's in the tens of thousands," he told the BBC. "For us not to be able to resolve that issue has been something that is distressing."
But how does the rate of firearm murders in the United States stack up against the rest of the world? The results are somewhat surprising.
The rate of gun murders per 100,000 people in the United States 3.55, a figure dwarved by the rate per capita of Columbia (27.1) and South Africa (17) to name just two.

US policy is doing everything wrong. Because of that, people are going to insist on guns to defend themselves and a large percentage of the disenfranchised are going to be criminal and dangerous.

Take a good look at that map, and remember whose troops fought in many of the light colored areas to help free the people who lived there under occupation and or tyranny.
Then remind us who should be unarmed.

I think America would be a lot friendlier place if everyone was packing heat.
Seems like that would solve 95% of the problem (assuming that “Progressive” Cities would disarm all of their peeps).

How many Americans were killed by criminal aliens since 9/11? Answer: over 50,000.
I have a serious gun problem - I can’t afford the guns I want.
There should be some sort of ObamaGun program so I can get a subsidy to express my Constitutional right.

You will not, because you know damn well that America has an inner city ghetto problem, totally divorced from firearms.
This is an apples and oranges comparison.
Spain, France, England, etc - even Canada - all have fairly homogenous populations.
America, the “great melting pot” has a heterogeneous population.
So direct comparisons between the US and those countries is invalid.
What WOULD be valid is to look at the US’s per 100,000 gun murder rate for citizens of English descent. Or French or Spanish descent. And, on the other hand, of Columbian, etc descent as well.
For countries like Canada, which aren’t quite as homogenous as others (having a mix of, say English and French descent) the American numbers can be weighted accordingly ...
