Is Social Liberalism Winning?
Townhall.com ^ | July 24, 2015 | Brent Bozell

Editor's note: This article was co-authored by Tim Graham.

The end of the Supreme Court term was depressing for conservatives. The double-whammy of a 50-state mandate for gay marriage and the upholding of Obamacare sounded the alarms for religious freedom. All that unease is measurable.

Credit The Washington Post for doing precisely that. The polling team has just reported, "Liberals have won a string of victories on gay marriage and health care reform this year, but a new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds a large majority of Americans are unhappy with where the nation is headed on social issues."

They found 63 percent of respondents are uncomfortable with the country's overall direction on social issues these days; 41 percent feel "strongly" uncomfortable about the nation's changes.

The spin coming from the media suggesting there is a national celebration underway is simply false. Indeed, the findings aren't encouraging for Democrats: 51 percent of racial minorities are uncomfortable with the current tide on social issues, along with two-thirds of women and even 50 percent of adults under age 30. That doesn't sound like the conventional wisdom about the "right side of history" crushing everything in its path.

The left counts on unelected forces to press its agenda. Hollywood's assembly line of products push the LGBT agenda with so much fervor that polls show Americans think about a quarter of the population is gay, 10 times higher than reality. Judges with their fingers in the wind feel "change" is in the air, and bow to media elite pressure.

But the debate isn't over. On the hot-button issues individually, the nation is divided. "History" is incomplete. It's as fluid as the liberals are on gender. It's true that gays have made significant gains in recent years -- but how significant? On the Supreme Court mandate for gay marriage, 52 percent expressed support and 44 percent were opposed (51 to 45 among registered voters). The public divides more closely on the Supreme Court ruling for Obamacare (45 percent for, 42 percent against).

Nevertheless, media coverage of these issues lines up dramatically for making and solidifying "change" and lectures that the Republican Party would be suicidal to take a stand against the tsunami of social liberalism. It dovetails perfectly with President Obama's spin. Both willfully ignore polls that suggest otherwise.

A new AP-GfK poll also found less of a social revolution in the polls. Their survey found support for gay marriage in America slipped to 42 percent, with 40 percent opposing. Only 39 percent backed the Supreme Court decision, 41 percent were opposed, and 18 percent didn't take a position. When gay rights was placed alongside religious liberty, 39 percent said it's more important for the government to protect gay rights, while 56 percent said protection of religious liberties should take precedence. Support for religious vendors being able to refuse to serve gay marriages climbed seven points to 59 percent.

Unease with the state of social issues in the country surely means other issues as well, including illegal immigration, legalizing marijuana in several states, racial rioting, and the rhetorical war on police officers coming from the left.

No one should believe liberals when they imply that social conservatives are finished. As a liberal hero once proclaimed on a convention stage, "the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.

Social liberalism is winning, and will continue to win, because we have a socialized and centrally-controlled monetary system.

People don’t see the connection, but money is the prose of society, and if we had a real currency and actual free-market interest rates, the US Government could NO WAY be $18 Trillion in debt. This control also used to steal middle class wages and savings through the tax of inflation and financial repression. The fact that that purchasing power of a dollar has decreased something like 98% since the creation of the Federal Reserve 100 years ago says it all. it accelerated in the 1960s with LBJ and went ballistic when Nixon finally found it necessary to sever any link to gold. To whom did that buying power go?

With that kind of power and funding, progressive government can then be everything to everybody and insinuate itself into every part of civil society. That money was spent on 1000 social engineering projects - from $500 million per year for planned parenthood, to an army of ACORN vote farmers, to HUD to Obamacare. Government, for now anyway, can use fake money to bail itself out, maintain the present system, and keep Americans from experiencing any disastrous consequences of the problems it has caused, as we saw in 2008. We can live consequence free with our big government, for now anyway.

Conservatives can’t win against that and few conservative politicians can resist it. Centralized Government, controlled by Progressives who believe in its mission, will continue to win, and conservatives will continue to be surprised and shocked.

Ben Franklin said: “When the people find that they can vote themselves money that will herald the end of the republic.” And that’s exactly what is happening.

This is just BS to split conservatism into Balkan camps.

conservative is conservative. Social issues cost money. Money costs social issues. they can not be separated except in the eyes of delusional DC pundits, campaign managers, and fetish practicing obsessed politicians.

It isn’t that social liberalism is winning. The real problem imo is that parents have not been making sure that their children are being taught the Constitution in the first place, particularly the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers. All three branches of the corrupt federal government are consequently getting away with unconstitutonal interpretations of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court’s action in Obergefell is beyond their authority. Ignore it.

the more they destroy the economy, the more dependent on big govt the people become.

they’ve also been pounding the drive out of boys since 1994. boys that otherwise would have grown to be the next generation of business owners.

by dumbing down the kids, they’re insuring a need for govt assistance.... furthering their goal (progress!) to achieve a communist ‘utopia’

Normally, Rush would be right. The political pendulum does swing back and forth.

However, changing demographic factors, both here and in Europe, coupled with more and more people on both sides of the Atlantic, dependent upon government, has transformed politics in the West.

Mass popular democracy inevitably leads to unlimited government and socialism.

Our Founding Fathers established a limited government constitutional republic. We no longer have this. But that is the type of government most hospitable to free market capitalism, individual liberty, and private property rights.

Unease with the state of social issues in the country surely means other issues as well, including [...] legalizing marijuana in several states

Since those legalizations have been done via referenda, I'm far less "sure" about this than the author. And why is this a "social issue" anyway? Selling is zoned and regulated, and I haven't heard that any significant amount of using is public - so who's being imposed upon?

They’re definitely in the catbird seat. Several generations of academia, the media, and the entertainment industry brainwashing young people has left much of the youthful segment of the company in thrall to socialist thinking. No sense trying to deny it. You even have many so-called young conservatives believing nothing’s wrong with homo marriage.

deaths while driving stoned.

The people who before legalization didn't smoke pot because it was illegal, will after legalization not drive stoned because it's still illegal - ergo, no reason to expect a rise in stoned driving due to legalization.

Winning? WINNING?

We've murdered 50 million or so unborn children. Christian business owners are being shut down in deference to a demographic so vile and perverse that God has already destroyed them once. We're seeing our history erased in the name of appeasing a black culture that truly has nothing better to do.

Winning? Dude. They've won. They won long ago. Now we're just seeing the final signs of life in the corpse that used to be America.
