Sandra Bland had marijuana in her system, DA reported as saying (Now a Possible Murder)

Sandra Bland, the black woman found hanging dead in a Texas jail days after a traffic stop, smoked or possibly swallowed a large amount of marijuana while in custody, her family's attorney reported the district attorney as saying.

Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis made the disclosure in a text message to attorney Cannon Lambert, who has called the state's autopsy on the Chicago-area woman defective, Lambert said.

"Looking at the autopsy results and toxicology, it appears she swallowed a large quantity of marijuana or smoked it in the jail," Mathis said in a text message to Lambert that the attorney provided to Reuters.

After the incident escalated into an altercation between her and the trooper, Bland was taken into custody and charged with assaulting an officer. She was found hanging in her jail cell on July 13 with a plastic trash bag around her neck.

Her death was originally ruled a suicide, although officials have said they are handling it as a murder probe.

According to Lambert, Mathis said the state needs to conduct a second autopsy on Bland, whose body was returned to the Chicago area on Wednesday in preparation for a funeral on Saturday.

"The family's confidence is shaken by the continued discrepancies that are surfacing," Lambert said in an email to Reuters.

You left out a few lines from the version I saw;

please out out that cigarette...
I don't have to, I'm in my own car...
Put out that cigarette! (Probably here that he said (or)"I'll light you up")...
Please get out of the car...
don't have to get out of my car...
she did get out of the car, with an attitude.
Cop's big mistake was walking her out of the frame, should have set her down on the curb in front of his unit.

As to "how'd she get marijuana in her system?"...
How much time did she have before the altercation/Why was she so hostile over a low level traffic stop? And, how long will a balloon last while trying to work it's way through stomach acid and peristalsis?
Wouldn't be the first time.

Thanks. I’ve been retired since 2003, and couldn’t remember the exact numbers anymore. NY State prisons used the Becton-Dickinson test kits, you know, the ones where you break the ampules and wait for it to change color. Anything more elaborate was done by medical staff, and sent to outside lab.

"The family's confidence is shaken by the continued discrepancies that are surfacing,"

What "discrepancies" are they talking about? Didn't it occur to this Reuter's "reporter" to ask that basic question before writing this story?

Yeah, I know, this could be wrong, but wiki disagrees.

They’re saying it was while in jail.

...

I believe it’s her lawyer saying it, not “they.”

More likely your scenario. I find it hard to believe she was smoking that much in a holding cell.

...

Of course not. Pot has a strong odor. They’d be smelling it on the other side of the building.

OTOH, pot does stay in the system for awhile because it’s fat soluble.

The cop is probably in trouble. He looks to White and the perp is a double, possibility triple protected minority.

...

He’s one of those extremely rare white Hispanics.

Anyone else notice that Bland was bigger than the cop?

She was not arrested before she got out of the car.

The police officer told her she was under arrest before she got out of the car.

Mathis is the DA. Lambert is her lawyer.

Yeah what's one more cop, more or less, abusing his authority?

” even my family won’t help me —> despair.”

Quite possible. She was very disturbed. Lost a baby. Tried to commit suicide once. Was cutting herself. Certainly she was someone who could have used some help. Tough case, eh?

The information is still coming from the lawyer. I wouldn’t trust it until it’s verified.

She was not arrested before she got out of the car.

She was being lawfully detained because she was posing a threat.

...

Good response. An officer can take measures to make a detainment safe.

“Certainly she was someone who could have used some help.”

Sad case for sure. Even in the midst of personal tragedy, cussing out a cop is not a smart move. Otherwise she should not have been arrested at all! Maybe even with her disrespect and resisting arrest, she need not have been incarcerated for three days. . . maybe the cops thought she would get out of jail like most do, in a heart beat.

The thing that got me, is that she was in jail for three days and even her family would not help to bail her out.

With what she had been through, that could have been the final blow.

Tragedy. A case like this — should not have resulted in three days in jail and a death. I do not know why people think they can smart-mouth off cops and struggle with them. I guess most cops don’t have advanced degrees in human psychology and compassion either . . . to diffuse the situation. With the number of cops harmed and killed, how far can one blame them?

In THIS case, the cop was beligerant, IMHO. When I have been stopped for speeding, the first thing I want is a cigarette! Making sure my hands are in view, and I do not put a cig butt on the highway! A cigarette is a natural response to the stress of being stopped, no matter how guilty or innocent! Still if the cop told me to snuff it out, I hope I would have.

“Tragedy. A case like this”

Yeah. It’s not really simple. The gal was a really troubled person. Doesn’t excuse all her traffic violations, but,,,, she was a messed up person. Sad all around, imo/

Yeah, she probably had twenty kilos of pot hidden internally.

My first job was in a grocery store many decades ago, and I saw all manner of attempted hoax “accidents” in order to cash in - and they were almost ALWAYS perpetrated by black women. We’d watch them in the produce section throw grapes on the floor and then try to “slip” on them.

This was in the days before ubiquitous surveillance cameras, so we had to be very vigilant.
