Cuomo on using executive power: 'I run the government'

ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo made it clear Wednesday why he has recently bypassed the Legislature on different issues like raising the minimum wage for fast-food workers.

"I run the government," Cuomo said.

"I am the executive and therefore I use executive power. And that’s why the executive is given the power," Cuomo said during an appearance on upstate public radio’s “The Capitol Pressroom.”

Cuomo dismissed criticism that his actions represent a major power grab by going around the Legislature.

In addition to creating a board that has recommended raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour for fast food workers, Cuomo recently went it alone in appointing Attorney General Eric Schneiderman as a special prosecutor to investigate cases where unarmed civilians are killed by police.

And he also entered into a signed agreement with Senate Republicans that held off on the implementation of a key provision of his much ballyhooed gun control law. On Wednesday he again denied he walked away from the provision to require background checks on ammunition sales, saying the state will move forward when it develops a workable database.

Cuomo during the legislative session had proposed raising the statewide minimum wage and also sought a criminal justice reform package.

When the Legislature did not act, Cuomo decided to use his executive powers to push changes through without the lawmakers.

“I am the executive,” he said. “I have many powers beyond those which the Legislature passes.

“The executive, whether it’s the President, the mayor or the governor, you run the government,” he said. “And you have a whole host of powers that are apart and aside from the Legislature.”

There seems to be a talking point promoted by the “government intrusion is the solution” pro-inflationists aka “Progressives” that should be “talked about”.

They claim that use of automated cutomer services along with other types of automation would not be abated if those $15 dollar and higher government imposed ammounts on a former free market would still happen no matter if the higher costs imposed on the market by government did not occur.

It should be perfectly clear this is nonesence and that these “Inflationists” have no idea of the workings of a free market and per unit production cost. Or how government intrusion would severely limit not only market choices but would discourage development in any given sector be it fast foods or automobile manufacturing.

Put simply if the government imposes higher per unit cost. Those very expensive costs of automation vs costs per unit may warrant if affordable (small businesses and startup’s can’t) its implementation . If not that product line or service get discontinued or moved to a location where there is not that government interference in the creation of that unit. They’ve learned nothing from Seattle.
