It appears to be sinking in with top Republicans that the upcoming GOP debate, featuring star performer Donald Trump, could prove to be a full-blown disaster. Politico has this amusing report:
Trumps presence at center stage his reward if he maintains his lead in the polls is likely to transform the first Republican debate into a major media event, bringing big ratings to Fox News, the debate sponsor. By the same token, however, it will likely turn the traditionally policy-focused event into a pageant of personality, which is a potential nightmare for other candidates.
I think you have to assume hell be loud and aggressive and do everything he can to stay on offense, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who gave the most commanding debate performances of the 2012 primary cycle, told POLITICO. Trump is very smart, he has lots of TV experience and is absolutely uninhibited.
Considered almost unthinkable just five weeks ago, Trumps appearance at center stage is now the most inconvenient of truths for the would-be Republican front-runners. From Milwaukee to Miami, campaign aides are already wrestling with the Trump factor strategizing on how to engage with him (if at all) and how to stave off his attacks.
The Hill adds this amusing tidbit:
Republican insiders are reconciling themselves to the idea that Donald Trump wont be exiting the stage anytime soon and their main concern now is limiting his damage to their party it looks virtually certain that he will be included in the first major televised debate, hosted by Fox News on Aug. 6.
For all the handwringing among Republicans, I think its very possible that Trump-palooza might not actually end up mattering that much, if at all, over the long term

That is where Cruz and Trump can be an asset to each other.
A lone wolf is easy pickings.
There is strength in numbers even if the number is only 2.
Perfect opportunity for some adult diaper ads.
Right now Rick Perry’s advisers are wondering: glasses or no glasses for the debate?

Personally I’m looking forward to the event. Alcohol and popcorn,,,trying to think ahead as to what might be a great drinking game word.
Everybody in the pool. :-)
Thank You I was wondering the same thing.
I hear what you’re saying and while I respect it, it sounds like more of the same milquetoast approach. I gotta say, we have a unique opportunity to determine what the rules are now,not play by someone else’s legacy rules.
Also I find these two statements in direct contradiction.
“In order to do that Trump will need to be much less careless in what he says. He doesn’t have to change what he believes, but he must learn to present the issues in a thoughtful way, so as to not alienate potential supporters with needless barbs.
At some point, Trump will have to face the fact that he will need to unify a majority of Americans, if he is to have any chance of winning.”
Trump IS unifying the base now,,that’s why he is polling so well. I know it’s been a long time for all of us, but THAT’s what unity looks like! It’s ok for us to be ahead and it’s ok to set NEW rules.
The reason the media wants a piece of Trump isn’t because they respect a conservation position, he’s interesting, he’s dynamic and he knows how to say what he means. Media is poised to tear him down, word by word. He knows that.
He can’t change who he is or he would come across as fake.
The rough around the edges part is who he has always been and people come to expect that about Trump. It’s really ok, IMHO.
And no harm intended toward your opinion.
“Damage to the party” = Trump will run off all of the weak RINOs...
“The only one wholl try to hijack the debate is that crazy ass Perry,”
I don’t think Perry is going to have enough of a showing to be invited.
Maybe just maybe but a doubt it these panzy a## crybaby girly men will grow some balls and start talking about the real problems instead of hiding behind each others dresses. Trump has put the fear in all of them, get the popcorn
WOO-HOO!
LOLOLOLOL
With the popcorn and drink of choice or $ for the betting pool.
;)
Republicans have been cringing for seven years.
ALL cringable republican stuff.. MUST BE encringed..
The republican party is very cringable... and needs cringe worthy comments.. to make the cockroaches run for cover and the RINOs howl in exquisite PAIN...
I say if it’s cringable.. THEN.. encringe it..
IF it’s NOT.......... then it’s Not..
My money says Trump in the debate will focus on the issues. He won’t attack a fellow debater unless they “ask for it”.
Sargent is an obama lackey, I believe nothing of what he has to say
Last thing I want to see is Trump losing his rough edges. In fact I hope he gets rougher.
