We spend about $200 there a month. That’s a ton of groceries at aldi’s. Drastically cut my grocery bill by going there.
When I visited the States last March, for the first time since I was a child, that was one thing that surprised me. It seems half the retail space in many stores is devoted to the various spirits.
Yes, they are here and have been for at least 4 or 5 years. We stopped at one in Ocala, FL, and I know of at least one in GA.
We shop extensively at Aldi. Prices are great, selection is sufficient and quality is fine. Looking forward to Lidl
I haven’t heard of Lidl. There’s a TJ’s in the People’s Republic of Cary, not too far away. I like their soap. It’s easy on my rosacea.
A&P just declared bankruptcy for 2nd time in 5 years
Looks permanent now - selling off some stores to other chains
and closing rest.....
No charge for carts. You get your quarter back.
Varies greatly by state. In CA they sell booze more or less like anything else. Other states have state liquor stores and similar stupidities.
Aldi's is almost entirely house brands, On the up side, their house brands are usually, though not always, pretty good.
We have a couple of Aldis nearby.
Some people praise them. I thought the prices were OK, but their produce was horrible.
Loved it until I realized it was the king of products with lots of ingredients. I have an MSG sensitivity which can send my heart rate over 100. Their stuff has every alias for MSG or at least stuff that contains free glutamate. Still get the dairy and produce. If your sensitive and want to bring on full blown tachycardia, try the horseradish flavored potato chips. They're great.
Aldi had a srore in center Pennsylvania since 1994 at least. We don’t shop at Aldi often anymore since my wife is a health food nut but when money was tighter than it is now, they saved us a bundle.
My late MIL was shopping at Aldi’s in NJ around 2000 or so. And I know there is one near Hanover PA.
I found it to be the same. If you buy produce there, you need to eat it on the way to the car, although it has gotten a little better in the last year or so.
Aldi’s arrived about 18 months ago. It’s a drive for us but we are out in the country. We purchase some things there regularly as the store brands are as good as the national brands and quite literally half the price. They carry some of the better brands of cheese for very reasonable prices. The store brand cheeses are good and they have at least one offering of anything you might need in that category. Good source for canned fruit and tomatoes. Fresh produce varies but is always very inexpensive. Good place for things like bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots and lettuces.
Aldi’s has been around since I was a baby (1990’s). According to the mom it wasn’t a great experience. We had occasion to pass by one in PA a few weeks ago; needed to shop urgently but she wouldn’t set foot in Aldi’s.
That is why there is a money savings. Advertising is how you know brands and it drives the price of foods up.
Our Aldi stores in Florida are carrying an increasing number of organic and very healthy products. Luckily, our store is conveniently located and we stop by a few times a week, particularly for produce.
I was just at ALDI’s in Scranton, PA on Monday. Bought lovely black grapes and bananas (39 cents/ lb). Always buy their decaf coffee, evaporated milk and canned chicken broth. Very often butter and eggs are cheaper than my hometown grocery store.
What I like best is that there aren’t 100 different brands of the same thing. I just had both knees replaced and hiking around miles of differently branded nearly identical things is literally a pain!
I used to shop TJ’s back in the 80s and 90s. They had great deals back then, because they bought a lot of closeouts, off brands, and failed products. I used to buy great small batch booze for under $5 a bottle. Now their mostly house brands, and not really much cheaper than elsewhere. IMHO they are victims of their own success. Back when they had 20 stores and they bought say 100 cases of something, they could ship 5 cases to each store. Inventory changed but there were great deals. Now if they buy small batches it isn’t even worth stocking. So they rely on having people produce stuff under their name, and their costs are the same as other peoples.
