Have one right up the street. We only buy a few items at TJ’s because it’s not cheap OR healthy.
Can you bring your own carts and carryout bags?
They have added more organic foods at Aldi’s from what I hear.
btw, and an FYI to all.. Aldi’s contracts with major name brand food manufacturers. The packaging is simply changed.
Carts are free, require quarter in slot to unlock, refunded when cart returned. Many customers bring their own bags.
“Some of their prices for fruits and vegetables are obscenely low.”
My only problem with Aldi produce has been onions. A two dollar bag goes bad within a week.
As a habit, I never had bought my groceries at Wegman’s. I found their prices to be elevated. Then again, that’s back when I was doing all the household grocery shopping when I lived with a buddy of mine in NJ... and we had access to a Shop-Rite. I miss SR prices, quality, and service.
Maybe we should check them out again.
I went to an Aldi’s in Greensboro.
Eh. Not all that impressed. Stuff for cheap that I really didn’t want.
That’s too bad... A&P was my reserve store... every other month 8 O’clock Coffee would go on sale, the big 3+ lb. bags were on sale 2 for 1... and I would bring all my coupons and clean them out of the whole bean dark Italian roast... and get rainchecks for the maximum amount I could. I have pictures somewhere of nearly 50 lbs. of coffee on the counter that I got for something like $2/lb.
Best coffee for the price IMHO.
I like stocking up on items like canned beans and canned tomatoes (especially for making chili), pasta and pasta sauce, cereals, and other staples (flour & sugar, etc., at Christmas when Im baking) all of which I find to be just as good as name or grocery store brands. I will also stock up on their ground turkey, chicken breasts and chicken tenders that I find are all very good and I divide the large packs up into smaller ones at home and freeze. I also buy their Fit & Active brand yogurt and their Fit & Active frozen entrées which are very much like Lean Cuisine - I take them to work for lunch. The only downside is that there arent that many varieties.
The only problem for me with some of their produce and fruits buys, are that the best bargains are in the big family packs and being single and living alone, its typically just too much for me.
The only item Ive bought at Aldis that really disappointed me was dishwashing liquid. It was sort of thin and didnt soap up very well, it ended up not being much of a bargain because I had to use twice as much. I went back to buying Ajax brand at the regular grocery store. There are some other items that I have a strong name brand loyalty to are deodorant (Secret) and laundry detergent (Arm & Hammer). Ive tried other brands, or store brands or off label brands but for some items, I keep going back to those name brands.
They have been here a while. But now they’re going into an aggressive expansion mode.
I wonder, are they moving into the ‘food desert’ niche?
Used to shop at the Redondo Beach store back in the day.
Well said. I think you have clearly described TJs problem from too much success. Now we need to find someone smaller who is running with Trader Joe’s old model.
We just got a brand new Aldi’s up the street. I go there all the time. The prices are great.
We have two Aldi’s in our area. It is interesting that both are in buildings that were former A&P stores.
Neither did I at first. Now I can confidently purchase their house brands because they are terrific.
As for *horse meat*, I bought some special order spareribs that were lean and juicy, some baby backs, ditto at prices about .40-.60/lb below Walmart’s fatty offerings. Their corned beef is always $1-$2 less than anywhere else and is just fine. I haven’t bought other meat there, as my local grocery store has good deals or I go to Sam’s, also good prices/value/quality.
Produce is exceptional quality and exceptionally low price.
I buy their restaurant quality coffee at $4/12 oz and mix it 1/2 and 1/2 with my pricey Sumatra ($11/lb.)No one can tell the difference.
.39/individual container of flavored yogurt
.65 for Chobani singles
$1.00 for 8oz cream cheese
$1.60 for a quart of 1/2 & 1/2
My favorite water for $2 less than anywhere else
$4 for a Cabernet BETTER than some $11 offerings
I have gone from a cautious shopping of $30-$50 to buying $70-$80 at a time there because of the quality/price. If they were closer, I would probably do 90% of my shopping there...I have to travel 45 miles each way.
You are correct....I think.
Honestly, I had no clue TJ’s was around during the 70’s. :)
