USGS Scientist: Major Quake On Hayward Fault Expected ‘Any Day Now’

(CBS SF) — The fault that produced a 4.0-magnitude earthquake in Fremont early Tuesday morning is expected to produce a major earthquake “any day now” and Bay Area residents should be prepared, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist said.

The 2:41 a.m. earthquake on the border of Fremont and Union City occurred on the Hayward Fault at a depth of 5 miles. The epicenter was at a spot just north of the intersection of Niles Canyon Road and Mission Boulevard.

The quake caused some BART delays early today while work crews checked the tracks, but appears to have caused no major damage. At least 13 smaller quakes or aftershocks have been reported near the same location as of 6:42 a.m., the largest of which was a 2.7-magnitude at 2:56 a.m.

I remember, when I was in middle school, teachers telling us a “big one” in CA, could completely separate CA from the mainland.

The quality of teachers has not improved I see. Ignorance has never held teachers back from spouting off. Now they just try to tie them to globull warming.

It's already happened, but without the earthquake:)

Overdue. The San Adreas and other faults have been building up stress for decades and have to release eventually. When “eventually” occurs is the kicker.

Bart goes under water. The rides probably pretty spooked down there in a quake.

There’s an underwater tunnel from Oakland to Alameda. I traveled thru this for years. I had actually went thru it and then on the the 880 double deck FWY, which collapsed that same day due to the Loma Prieta quake in 1989.

No, that’s a job for Obama. And if the earth’s tectonic plates don’t obey, then they are racist.

Not yet maybe after a Tsunami caused by the quake takes out the rest of the San Fran Bay area. Then maybe!

"Perhaps Governor Brown should pass a law forbidding earthquakes."

Only $15/gallon gasoline will save California.
And all the electric utilities should raise their rates by 200%!
Only by massive cut backs in energy use and production will California be saved from earthquakes and Florida and the East Coast be saved from hurricanes. We're doomed if Global Warming/Climate Change isn't stopped. There ought to be a law against summer time and deserts!

And LA county, because LA County alone has the largest number of illegals and liberals

major earthquake “any day now”

I live on the San Andreas fault. With this news our social group is taking bets on who can stand up the longest during the next big one over 5.0. The pool of cash is enormous now.

“any day now” could mean any day between today and, say, 10 years from now, right?

” The rides probably pretty spooked down there in a quake.”

yes... that’s where you don’t want to be. It happened to my friend a number of years ago in a 5.0+ quake. The Bart trains were stopped underground for about 1/2 hour.

.... Didn’t they have a tremor there today? That would probably relieve a little seismic pressure if it was on the same fault ......... Or perhaps it’s a precursor to a bigger one ..... In the mean time ..... a lot of pre-emptive Global Warming and Bush’s faults are probably being spewed out of the mouths of many in ‘Frisco right now.

Yes they did. I have never seen a forecast saying “Any Day Now” like this before.

A daily prayer.

Please heavenly father, unleash the hounds of hell. At least a small tremor, just enough to swallow up the Castro district and Nancy Pelosi’s mansion.

Thy will be done, Amen.
