Sen. John McCain speaks out for the first time regarding comments made about him by 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"The best thing to do is to put it behind us and move forward, and express our gratitude to those who served and sacrificed," Sen. John McCain told Morning Joe. "Who are the real heroes? The 55,000" men who died in Vietnam.

"Never murder a man who is in the process of committing suicide," McCain handlers told CNN Monday morning.

You watch; John McCain is playing this masterfully. The GOP Establishment boys, apparently, got together and came up with this "sweet, gracious, little comment". I think I feel a tear dripping down my cheek.

He’s running for re-election so of course he’ll be gracious. No one wants to see the insane madman that hides under that face (at least some of the time).

Trump owes McCain no apology.
McCain, however, owes the American people an apology for being a rotten Senator, a Democrat masquerading as a Republican at that, and for calling patriots "crazies" and "Tea Party hobbits".
But he is right about one thing: his hero level is rather low, as was his class standing.

“The nearly eight-minute video is posted on YouTube under ‘Vietnam Veterans Against McCain.’ It begins with the title, ‘1992 Senate Select Committee on POW/MIAs,’ and features ex-Sen. Bob Smith (R-NH), Rep. Robert Dornan (R-CA), senate staffers Tracy Usry, James Lucier, and military family members Lynn O’Shea, of the National Alliance of Families and retired Army Cpl. Bob Dumas, whose brother was a POW lost in the Korean War, and Joseph Douglass, Jr., author of Betrayed, about America’s missing POWs. The video has no author credits.

The footage begins with Douglass, Usry, O’Shea and Smith all saying that McCain worked to kill legislation that would have opened the Pentagon’s classified archive of POW/MIA files. ‘Many, many documents were held back for no reason,’ former Sen. Smith said. Dorman said legislation that passed the House with no opposing votes was single-handedly blocked in the Senate by McCain. ‘On the Senate side, we had one person standing in the way,’ Dornan said, referring to McCain.

Dumas then gave the reason why - the Pentagon’s records would reveal McCain had collaborated with the Vietnamese. ‘He didn’t want nobody to check his background because a lot of POWs who were with him in the camp said he was a collaborator with the enemy,’ Dumas said. ‘He gave the enemy information they wanted.’

Lucier, identified as a former U.S. Senate Chief of Staff, said ‘we do know that when he was over there, he cooperated with Communist news services in giving interviews that were not flattering to the United States.’ Usry, identified as U.S. Senate Minority Staff former chief investigator, said ‘information shows that he made over 32 tapes of propaganda for the Vietnamese government.’

[former Rep. Robert Dornan (R-CA)] said there were transcripts of other POWs reacting to McCain’s false statements, saying, ‘Oh my God, is that Admiral McCain’s son? Is that the admiral’s son? Is that Johnny, telling us that our principle targets are schools, orphanages, hospitals, temples, churches? That was Jane Fonda’s line.’

Dornan said those transcripts are in war museums in North Vietnam, where McCain, as a senator, pressured the country not to release them or face opposition concerning normalization of relations with the United States.

‘McCain could not have wanted those to turn up in the middle of a presidential race,’ the ex-congressman said. ‘He knows that. I know that. And a few other people know that. That’s why he was against Bob Dole’s legislation.’

Dornan then offered another interesting explanation why McCain refused an offer by the North Vietnamese to be released. Dornan said those released first were collaborators, which would have ended McCain’s military career and hurt the Navy, where his father commanded the Pacific fleet.

‘Nobody takes that one step beyond that,’ Dornan said, speaking of McCain’s refusal to be released. ‘If Admiral John McCain’s son had accepted this princely status and come home in 1967, while others sat there for five years, what would the Navy have done with the son of an admiral who opted to get special treatment and come home? No Navy career. No House seat. No Senate seat. It would have been the end of his career.’

‘Sen. John McCain told Morning Joe. “Who are the real heroes? The 55,000” men who died in Vietnam’

It’s 58,000+. I knew that off the top of my head.

The Vietnam Conflict Extract Data File of the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) Extract Files contains records of 58,220 U.S. military fatal casualties of the Vietnam War.

IMO we should not go off point by taking the bait whether he is a war hero or not. The object is what is going on with immigration and those who do not support stopping the illegal horde. We are getting side tracked into an impossible to escape blind canyon when we go down the hero or not path.

McCain, you are a spoiled little rich kid who ended up a POW and are riding it for political gain only for yourself and yours. We’re sick of you. No sympathy.

McCain knows as long as this issue is at hand, that freight train coming right at him on his actions afterwards will run him over. That is the only reason he is “acting” contrite and asking for this to be behind us. PERIOD!

Oh please, give it a rest. Trump is a loud mouthed idiot, and it is time to stop defending what the idiot said.

I have NO USE for the GOP Establishment. However, in this case, Trump just showed what a contemptible moron he is. McCain - with all his faults - showed more class that Trump ever has.

People wake up! Trump is playing you like a fiddle. He says exactly what you want to hear, but IMO he doesn’t mean any of it or would NEVER be able to do what is says.

There are plenty of conservative candidates (non-establishment) to chose from. Trump is NOT conservative he just says the “right” things to get you to think he is on your side and care about the things you care about.

In the long run he is making many conservatives look like fools for being associated with him. He will go down in flames and take a lot of good people with him.

Just like history’s other notable hero, he WAS a hero and IS not a hero today. Just as the person credited with the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and the Battle of Saratoga, He WAS a hero then but IS not a hero today. Benedict Arnold.

A hero is somepne who knows that he’s going into a situation where he may be killed, but he does it anyway, because it’s the right thing to do.
John McCain qualifies, because he flew missions over enemy territory and got shot at.
I salute his status as a hero, but I would not vote for the man, because his political values are contrary to my own.
Trump, on the other hand, is not a hero, but I share his political values and will probably vote for him.
I am a combat veteran.

Most Americans agree with everything Trump said about illegal immigrants, which is to say he is our spokesman. The GOP elite hate that viewpoint and us, but are spotlighting Trump for it. They are putting us all down, get it? We are all loud mouthed boors to them. Sheeple to be handled and silenced while they proceed with their own agenda.

I dont know why he hasnt toned it down by now, he got all the attention he needs, if he would be more elegant about what he says, he could sail right through. At this point, it simply sounds like he is trolling.
