While almost the entire Republican presidential field wasted no time unloading on New York billionaire Donald Trump last weekend for saying that Sen. John McCain, a Vietnam war POW, was not a hero, Sen. Ted Cruz took his time.
Cruz finally said that McCain, a Republican senator from Arizona, was a hero and a friend, but that Trump was a friend, too.
Why the double-speak?
Cruz, say political observers, sees his anti-Washington message aligning with Trumps especially on immigration and is looking to inherit those voters, after what most experts believe will be the businessmans inevitable departure from the race.
Cruz is trying to plant his flag as the leader in being anti-Washington, said Dave Carney, a veteran political strategist who is not aligned with any 2016 presidential campaign. Thats part of his winning coalition, he thinks.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., even tweeted Monday that Cruz was looking for Trumps leftovers.
There's something unseemly about Cruz following Trump around like a lost puppy, hoping to get his leftovers when he finally flames out, said McCaskill....

Claire is a joke....and my state keeps voting for her. She spends her days tweeting trash.....one of BO’s slobbering minions.
I’d just love to see Cruz take Ginsberg’s seat on the court :-)
Yup, IMO if not for those votes he would be in 2nd place today.
Smart move on his part.
I doubt Cruz really cares that much about “getting Trump voters”, as there is no assurance that Trump will be going anywhere.
Cruz does, however, understand the anger in the Republican base, and he is not about to listen to a bunch of Karl Rove-paid for ‘advisers’ (most of them gay, by the way) telling him that he can take the Republican base for granted, since they have nowhere to go, and that the Republican Party has to ‘expand’ to reach Hispanics, and that is done by Open Borders and Amnesty.
Cruz knows he’s young - he doesn’t have to win the big prize this time, or next. Lots of options and time for him. But he has a base of people that supported him when the Republican Establishment in Texas did everything possible to pull the rug out from him (I guess Cruz wasn’t “Hispanic enough” for them, LOL). Unlike McCain, who DESPISES his voters, Cruz remembers who’s on his side and supports them - and right now, they have NO PROBLEM with anything that Trump has said so far in this campaign, other than asking why it took so long for ANYONE to start talking it.
EXACTLY!
Because as we know....the polls in July of the off year are SO SO SO SO SO SO important!
LOL! They keep telling us that, despite the diversions being created by Trump, they fear Cruz and know he is currently the best funded Conservative on the ticket. Makes one wonder about the polls....
I never left him. I accept his explanation about his votes because I know his character, unlike many FReepers here who called him names, traitor, globalist, sell-out to Goldman-Sachs and Chamber of Commerce, NWO, Obama-enabler, etc.
We are thinking on the same line
A friend and I think he also would make an awesome AG. and then get a lifetime SC appointment
Regardless he should land in positions of great power. Utmost re$pact for the man
Back in the day the polls a year out probably weren’t so important, but today I think they are. The debates are less then a month. Perhaps all things will change. I think the debates have just because very interesting.....Trump is going to be arguing with every one of the nominees. As long as the nominees stay focused and don’t get down and dirty with Trump, they should be ok. I have to admit having Trump in right now is a hoot.
Well, the debates started earlier last cycle...the first one in I think March or April of 2011-— but we didn’t have the “ten man rule” for the Fox debate, so there is some credence to the fact that they matter now...but only to the point of who gets in the debates.
