The Obama administration wants to keep people collecting Social Security benefits from owning guns if it is determined they are unable to manage their own affairs, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The push, which could potentially affect millions whose monthly disability payments are handled by others, is intended to bring the Social Security Administration in line with laws that prevent gun sales to felons, drug addicts, immigrants in the United States illegally, and others, according to the paper.
The language of federal gun laws restricts ownership to people who are unable to manage their own affairs due to "marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease which could potentially affect a large group within Social Security, the LA Times reported.
If Social Security, which has never taken part in the background check system, uses the same standard as the Department of Veterans Affairs which is the idea floated then millions of beneficiaries could be affected, with about 4.2 million adults receiving monthly benefits that are managed by representative payees.

The English language is dying, this sentence was actually written by someone who thinks he is educated. My fifth grade teacher would have screamed at anyone who wrote this even if it did not contain the most glaring error.
That’s correct. They are talking about recipients of SSDI (Social Security Disability Income), not Social Security Retirement Income recipients. SSDI recipients never paid into the system that now pays them, can be 25 years of age, non-American, drug addicted, mentally imbalanced etc. Why would anyone want these people packing heat anyway?
That’s one tough customer for sure. If Uncle Sam was not named after Samuel Whittemore he should have been.
There are plenty of SSDI people who should and can own a gun. I think they are talking about the subset who have their affairs managed by a third party payee, often have guardians.
My friend is an X secret service agent. I asked him what he would fo today with Obama...he just smiled and said “duck!”
Obamacare databases, how convenient!
The crazy part is that the sentence is so poorly written that what it says is that ONLY those people would be able to own guns. It says it restricts ownership TO those people.
I already posted comment 41 about how pathetic the writing is, there is much wrong in addition to the fact that it says exactly the opposite of what the writer intended, genuine literacy is rapidly being eliminated in this country, soon we will have only a strange form of pidgin English spoken and written by people who will tell me that I misspelled pigeon. They will be certain that I misspelled it because they are members of the “most educated generation” in history, a subject of which they will be totally ignorant.
Under disparate impact reasoning, many blacks & hispanics would be banned from owning guns.

That’s wrong. You are confusing S.S.D.I. and S.S.I. Many recipients of S.S.D.I. have paid in for a big part of their lives. S.S.I. recipients, on the other hand, don’t have to have paid in a red cent.
Good point. The representative payee will probably be required to know and make sure they do not have a firearm.
Just thinking a little further on this....a lot of SSDI people may have a rep payee because they cannot handle their own finances well. Their disability may not preclude their ability to handle guns safely.
".....In July 2015, news accounts genuinely reported that President Obama was pushing to ban a subset of Social Security beneficiaries from owning guns if they lacked the mental capacity to manage their own affairs due to "marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease."
...... In other words ..... it's actually partially true. That said ....... It does appear that the administration is moving swiftly to take away the right to bear arms from certain members of our society .... including Military Vets etc. This is a back door way to castrate or nullify the 2nd Amendment.
Yes, it’s part of the expansion move against people with mental illnesses. There’s a bill in Congress, too. Dylan Storm Roof is the poster boy.
Exactly.
It would outlaw both purchases and possession for many, by the way. Then they, in turn, deprived of Second Amendment protection, would allow the next move against all other Americans.
With Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Clybrun called on Congress to expand Brady background checks and vote on the bill Thompson and Peter King (R-N.Y.) introduced earlier this year.
The Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act would require background checks for all gun sales to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and people who are mentally ill.

Actually, if you take the wording.....marked subnormal intelligence or mental illness, incompetency, condition or disease.....then refer to politics, then you would be able to remove at least five or six Senators presently, and maybe twenty House members. You might even be able to remove a President using the same wording.
If we are going to open up a Pandoras Box....let’s open it wide and pursue all professions (perhaps even journalism).
Will this also apply to those on federal pensions? Seems like a lot of people are going to choose, work and keep your freedom.. or sit at home in your chains with a government check. “Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you, may your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”-Samuel Adams My favorite part of his quote. This is as true of America today, as it was then.
