Al Franken 2000 on McCain: I don’t buy the war hero thing. Anybody can be captured

So the media, liberal hacks and so called Republicans have been bashing Donald Trump all day for speaking the truth about songbird John McCain, the often referred to ‘war-hero.’ Funny, Al Franken, a far left liberal Democrat said something very similar about McCain when he first ran for president in 2000.

I doubt I could cross the line and vote Republican. I have tremendous respect for McCain but I don’t buy the war hero thing. Anybody can be captured. I thought the idea was to capture them. As far as I’m concerned he sat out the war.

That’s actually worse than what Donald Trump said earlier today. Yet, did you hear the media or GOP go nuts and bash Al Franken for his comments about John McCain in 2000? Of course you didn’t, because they were just shrugged off by a left wing lunatic who would eventually become a Senator in the nutball state the call Minnesota.

Al Franken 2000 on McCain: I don’t buy the war hero thing. Anybody can be captured
Al Franken 2000 on McCain: I don’t buy the war hero thing. Anybody can be captured

So why such a contrast in reactions to Al Franken and Donald Trump? Really, it’s quite simple. Either you are politically correct and suck up to the DC cocktail weenie circuit, or you are branded a hater. I am very disappointed in people like Bobby Jindall and Rick Perry who have bashed Trump over his comments. Neither of these two or any other ‘Republicans’ who whine about Trump will get my vote in the primary or general election.

Audie Murphy and Alvin York were war heroes.

McQueeg was a POW.

McCain is an idiot, 100% agreement there. He did disappear when the Forestal was on fire, but on the other hand he did go on missions that frankly require some brass. Now specifically and I hope some aviators speak up was McCain on his missions just a “nose dipper, bomb dropper” or was he aggressive in his passes?

Maybe Al Franken can do the Sunday talk show circuit next week to explain how what he said was different that Donal Trump said.

Maybe the Trump camp will see this and next opportunity - and there will be one - they can remind the liberal, lying press of this inconvenient bit of hypocrisy.

That guy should have gone to jail for the Keating 5 scandal. He finished almost last in his class from the US Naval Academy. His name should be "Crash" since he lost so many aircraft he flew. He was in the USS Forrestal disaster that killed 134 sailors even though he did not cause it. He lost two runs for POTUS. Disaster follows this guy where ever he walks and whatever he touches similar to Obama.

His father and grandfather were great men who became admirals in the USN. That's the only positive thing I can find about him.

But Johnny?

Trump and Franken are correct, but even broken clocks are correct twice a day.

Democrats don’t care about attacking veterans, especially ‘conservative’ veterans (IE, ones who haven’t embraced that they really are ‘women.’) Chris Rock’s comedy routine on McCain took the same tact.

These articles aren’t for Democrat consumption, they’re to distance any conservative away from Trump.

Not a big McCain fan but it’s not like he took a wrong turn or was sleeping while on patrol and got captured. He was flying missions over Vietnam and under fire. That’s how he got shot down and captured.

Good find. If I recall correctly the left said similar things about George Bush (41) regarding his military record.

Yes, whatever. McCain is a hero for his service and what he endured, he is not one for his use of this to promote himself and political career. The ONLY reason anyone cares about Trumps comment is that Trump is inconvenient today. Franken was not relevant to anyone and thus ignored. I’m sure there are many others questioning others military service. As I’ve already said, when they where it as a badge saying vote for me because of this, it is wrong and criticism is fair. It was fair to observe that Bush II and Gore got assignments based on family, that Clinton protested the war, the Bush III skipped off to Mexico to avoid the draft, etc. Murtha was a war hero but look what he did later. Anyway, only a small percentage of elected officials even served, unless they make it an issue, we really should move on and focus on issues.

One must first determine who it is who's criticizing McCain's service record.I,for example,served...honorably but *not* courageously..during the Vietnam era.I never served anywhere near SE Asia and the most dangerous thing I ever did in uniform was eat Army chow.As a result I have no right to claim that McCain's record isn't worthy of respect and admiration.

OTOH,Franken who,I'll wager, never served in *any* capacity (in spite of having been born in '51) has no right whatsoever to make *any* disparaging remarks about McCain's service record.

And as for Trump...I'd have to find out what uniform,if any,he's worn during his life before commenting in detail about recent statements he's made.

In my mind those who went above and beyond in battle were the heroes like your two examples.
Medal of Honor recipients.

POW survivors are just that.

McCain has used up his “service record card” long ago.

What he has done in the Senate borders on treason.

Benedict Arnold was a genuine hero at Saratoga.

Anybody can be captured.

Not true. Very darn few Japanese were captured in combat, because they refused to surrender and/or killed themselves. On several of the islands we captured the only POWs were unconcious.

Of course Trump is going to borrow jokes from Democrats. Until very recently he was a Democrat. And I’m sure once he doesn’t get the nomination He will become a Democrat again

Assuming he doesn’t run third-party to help his good friend Hillary Clinton split the conservative vote

Flying dangerous missions is courageous, but heroic involves success. From the movie Patton"I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb bastard die for his country." The variant here is "You don't win a war by being captured by the enemy, you win by capturing the enemy" - No offense to Hogan's Heroes.

Exactly.I wonder if those making disparaging McCain's service record have any negative comments about any of the *other* Air Force,Navy or Marine aviators who wound up in the Hanoi Hilton.
