WIKI the fire itself and note the plane positions and the position of the plane from which the launch came from. It was starboard side aft of McCain's plane which was port side forward and both planes engines facing over the side away from any craft..
McCain's area was hit and he did the only thing he could which was get out of the area. HI CAPS had not yet been installed on carriers. Yes he did likely transfer off and here is why. He was in a "SQUADRON" when the ship pulls in they leave first. Actually Pilots leave the day before entering port if the ship was capable of launches from the Bow Cats. Each time a carrier deploys it is often with a different squadron. They go back to Oceana, Cecil Field, Etc and ships company sailors remain behind.
I've see the Forestall raw flight deck camera footage of that fire as has any sailor since the fire. The Navy doesn't hide it. Rather it is a mandatory training film in Basic then in every fire fighting school to follow. McCain's plane was not up at the CAT. He was about 3-4 launches behind.
Now I will say this much. McCain's family connections likely got him his commission etc I don't doubt that. But McCain was not responsible in even a fraction of blame for that fire. He can't leave office soon enough for me I'll say that.

That, however, is unrelated to his ability (or lack thereof) to make decisions as a representative of the people.

McCain is not a saint, and destroyed some Navy Aircraft, but he had NOTHING to do with the cause of the Forrestal fire. He was in an aircraft preparing for Takeoff and was very nearly killed in the inferno. The pilot in the plane next to McCain didn’t make it. As to traitorous activity while a prisoner of war, none of us were in the Hanoi Hilton.
One of the important issues learned from the war and POW status especially in POW status in North Vietnam was everyone has a breaking point, everyone, and when you break, you are broken. Be very careful what POW you label with traitor. Congress itself is more traitorous than a broken POW. That said, McCain’s actions Congressional and political following his Naval service are far more damaging to this country than anything he did during the Vietnam War IMHO.
TRUE. That is my understanding of the Forrestal incident. Young officer McCain was scrambling for his life, as were other pilots in line to take off.
Many genuine ground crew heroes disappeared in the blink of an eye as they struggled to contain the incident and cool the ordnance.
