AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott says he is reluctantly asking Texas Military Forces to arm soldiers at their home bases after Thursday’s attacks at military sites in Tennessee that killed four Marines and one sailor.

Abbott said in a release Saturday that he will authorize Adjutant General John Nichols of the Texas National Guard to arm National Guard personnel at military facilities across Texas. Abbott’s move followed shootings on two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tenn.

“It is with a heavy heart that I issue this order,” he said.

The Republican governor said the Chattanooga events made “clear that our military personnel must have the ability to defend themselves against these type of attacks on our own soil.

In the early days after 9-11, the Federal Government placed Regular and National Guard armed troops in the airports nationally. The public thought that putting those evil and scary guns in the airports was a good idea. The Administration was determined to fight Radical Islam, not surrender to them as we are doing now.

As long as our governor hands the loaf to those of us who agree with his actions, I won’t begrudge the whiny mice a few crumbs that fall...

I heard their guns weren't loaded.

I think that depended on the time and the airport. Ammunition was certainly available, but I think that for most time loaded magazines were not in the rifles.

The “National Guard” is merely the organized part of each State Militia. The unorganized part are all able bodied State Citizens (normally male between specified ages). And the entire Militia is supposed to be armed! That is one of the reasons we have the Second Amendment to our Federal Constitution.

It's about time we started acting like Americans and remembering our duty of self defense!!

Texas also has a Texas State Guard, which is not subject to federal control.

The Democrat sleeze merchants at the Dallas Morning Snooze does their usual smear job on Gov. Abbot. No doubt the murder of five military men by a jihadi makes him sad, and he would prefer that the Muslim-sympathizer in the Oval Office would give the order to allow our protectors to defend their own lives as well as their fellow soldiers.
Shame on the media pukes who slant stories to favor the Worst President in U.S. history.

Looks like the Dallas liberal news paraphrased ‘with heavy heart’, which I take to mean, ‘I hope you guys won’t have to use these, and, ‘I’m sorry our federal government is forcing us to defend ourselves to the man against their most favored immigrants’ to ‘reluctantly’

Lest they all admit that Texas YES elected a conservative governor over trailer abortion champion Wendy davis

Abbott is right there behind or with the governors who did the same yesterday

I was looking for it. Now I can get off FR and get to work

Indeed. Many states have provisions for a State Guard without having them activated.

And if I recall correctly, National Guard units are only subject to federal control when activated for federal service. Until then, their Governor is the Commander-In-Chief. So it is gratifying to see Governors starting to use their martial authority.

Abbott, don’t go appeasing the weak. When you make a stand, be proud of it.
