Every few years, Puerto Rican voters get to vote on this issue.
Usually less than 5% cast their ballots for independent-nation status (think; avowed Communist, Luis Gutierrez in Chicago).
A small percentage vote for statehood, but the vast majority vote to continue the Commonwealth status.
The vote is not binding on the US, but is designed to show the will of the Puerto Rican people.
Jeb wants to shove statehood down their throats. I guess that's just his style of leadership.
Would Spain take it back?
Or it could just be something he says because he thinks it will win him a few votes.
Ford, Reagan, and Bush were all on record favoring statehood, but nobody put any effort into making it a reality.
