Southern California restaurant holds contest to rename 'squaw' bread after complaint (rename it)

RIVERSIDE — A Riverside restaurant is holding a contest to rename its "squaw" bread after a customer refused to use the name, saying it is offensive.

Backstreet Restaurant owner Keith Holloway tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/1HYpPJI ) that a woman pointed to the dark brown, molasses-sweetened bread on the chalk menu board when ordering a few weeks ago. When asked why she wouldn't say the name, she said it was a slur.

Holloway promptly covered the name with a scrap of paper, temporarily renaming it brown bread. He is taking nominations for a new moniker through the end of the month.

There is (or was?) one in Los Gatos. Believe it or not, they thought steaming them was a perfectly good alternative!

In California, squaw bread is baked, not fried.

Yes, Indian Fry Bread is different here. Our local bakery sells "Squaw Bread." I think I'm going to stop and buy some on way home tonight, then clean my guns under my Confederate flag.

The bread formerly named in honor of the hard working, underprivileged, and under appreciated women indigenous to the Americas before that evil white Columbus arrived.

I live in Riverside County and pass through the City of Riverside on a regular basis, frequently stopping for lunch there. You can bet I will not be dining at this guy’s restaurant.

“Some but not all Native American condemnation of “squaw” results from claims that it comes from a word for the vagina.”

If that is the case, then maybe he should rename it Indian Pussy Bread.

Some of the suggested name changes were so good, I couldn’t improve on them.

Elizabeth Warren White Bread
Thin-Skinned Politically Correct Pansy Bread
Native American Gender Fluid Bread

Wouldn't Brown bread be offensive to Blacks or Latinos? Shouldn't we get rid of White bread because it is racist by nature?

Make sure you let the owner know the reason you will not be returning.
