Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) took a veiled shot at Donald Trump on Friday, saying that the "circus" surrounding Republican infighting on illegal immigration is hurting the party.
The circus currently surrounding the debate over illegal immigration sows division within our country and damages the Republican Party," McCain, the party's presidential nominee in 2008, said in a statement.
He added that "if the Republican nominee for president does not support comprehensive immigration reform and border security policy, we have no chance of defeating Hillary Clinton and winning the White House in 2016."
Top Republicans including Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus have rushed to do damage control, with Preibus reportedly asking Trump in a phone call to tone down his talk.

Liars, fraudsters, and liberal socialist enablers!
Keep on trucking Trump! Tell it like it is!
“Trump took a large verbal shot at Juan during yesterdays speech.”
Saw that. Well deserved. McClain is insufferable.
I agree with you there. I think Trump will eventually self destruct if the media has their way with anyone who speaks out. Still, Trump has hit a nerve that is felt throughout the electorate. There’s lots of people on both sides frustrated by open borders policy of the un-American regime that controls our beautiful country. A lot more than the media/ govt complex wants to verify publically.
I am so sick of the so-called “leaders” of the GOP advocating for the same America destroying policies as the Totalitariancrats. Trump is agreeing with us and UNAFRAID to tell the Nation that these morons are chicken merd.
Hey, Juan, you and your fellow amnesty pushers have been sowing division and damaging the Republican party since at least 2006.
Even if true, so what. Not dealing with the issue is hurting the country. What's more important Johnboy, the republican party or the nation? Hope you rot in hell someday, McCain.
mclame is the jimmah carter of the repubs...he just won’t shut up and go away. He was obviously tortured too much by the NVs.
This time next year when McCain is fighting for his political life, ( A fight I sincerely hope and pray he loses.) he will be all over TV in Arizona touting his tough immigration stance. I can see it now. John, in camo carrying an AR15 patrolling the border along with either the border patrol or one of his stooge Sheriffs here. I can think of at least three.
That is exactly what he did in 2010 and it worked. Well no camo or AR then, but it is going to be a little harder this time.
Mr. “build the damn fence” really needs to be in a retirement home in Mexico.
Be quiet John and take you meds...
Yeah...uh huh. Hitting hot button, topical, harmful to America topics is really bad for debate. Opening the eyes of Americans that don’t know jack sh## about history, economics or heritage is harmful huh!? Jackass
He doesn’t need to go to Mexico, he’s bringing it here. McCain is in the pocket of AZ agri. The combinations of cheap labor to tend their fields and fill servant positions, more food stamp spending to drive the price of their products up and government policies to drive the small producers out and snap up their land is McCain’s agenda. It is no mystery that the people of Arizona, legal and illegal, refuse to see this. They think this criminal empire somehow makes their lives better.
Yea, Mr. McCain, your me-too-Dems stance really helped YOU win the presidency!
No conservatives are allowed on my lawn!!
Spoken like a true democrat.
Its hurting McStain’s chances for re-election is what its hurting. I am loving it.
The Republican PARTY is the problem, and it needs to be hurt... and if it doesn’t learn (which it hasn’t in the last 9 years), it needs to be dismantled. Idiots like McCain who choose Party over Country needs to be removed ASAP.
McCain’s 2008 campaign was truly a circus, with McCain fumbling and acting senile, and at one point stopping campaigning. It made one wonder if he was actually throwing the election - not that I ever believed he had a chance.
If the GOP would actually DO something about illegal immigration, there would be no “circus”.
Near as I can tell, the GOP (with few exceptions) wants the flood to continue.
Mr. McCain, you have my permission to STFU.
