Donald Trump Defiantly Rallies a New ‘Silent Majority’ in a Visit to Arizona
NY Times ^ | JULY 11, 2015 | NICHOLAS FANDOS

PHOENIX — Donald Trump, the real estate mogul and reality television star who has taken center stage in the race for the Republican presidential nomination this week, delivered a rambling monologue on Saturday, dismissing a long list of critics and rivals while rallying what he termed a new “silent majority” of voters.

Mr. Trump had less to say about immigration, the topic on which his controversial comments have garnered so much attention, than about those who have criticized those comments. For more than an hour, he ticked through a list of businesses and fellow candidates who have tried to censure him since his long-shot campaign began three weeks ago.

The speech had a distinctly celebratory air as Mr. Trump lauded himself for the “massive” crowds he has drawn and the attention he has brought to immigration and other issues that he said “weak” politicians were afraid to address.

“The silent majority is back, and we’re going to take our country back,” Mr. Trump said.

The speech, hosted by the Republican Party of Maricopa County, drew a crowd of several thousand people to the convention center here, making it one of the largest campaign events for any candidate to date, even as the crowd of 10,000 predicted by the Trump campaign did not appear to materialize. Outside, in the 100-degree desert heat, supporters who could not make it into the room waved American flags and sparred with a smaller but vocal group of protesters.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, for many the face of the state’s harsh laws cracking down on illegal immigrants, preceded Mr. Trump on stage at the businessman’s invitation.

Hey NYT, are you reporting accurately the paltry number of people showing up at Hillary events? Of course not.

I especially like the several shots he took at Macys.

Slyly suggesting that more people should cut up their Macys cards was satisfying, even to me.

He’s going to drive them into the ground.

There with be very few companies abandoning him from this time forward, I predict.

Don’t Screw with The Donald.

He’ll screw you right back.

Do today’s Republican candidates receive Fed/Gov security protection?

America is ready for socialism! Massive majorities back Bernie Sanders on the issues — and disdain Donald Trump: Trump channels the right’s angry Fox News id. But Sanders speaks to America’s soul — and our values

For the Hilarity relaunch the 'overflow' area wasn't even needed. Did the NY Times ever mention that?

When he said this, it was the first time I stopped and actually wrote it down.

The speech was then over, but that to me, was the number one go-forward sound-bite, though the speech was powerful, and hit a load of important subjects.

Good job Donald.

In the corrupt little minds of the New York Times 10,000 people isn’t that much - but 300 people’s impressive.

How can this be? What’s the NYT’s really saying?

Translation: 10,000 for Trump isn’t much. Three hundred for Hillary is a lot. Why? Because he has an “R” by his name and she has a “D” ... and they’re as biased as they come.

Yeah and he's keeping them busy. Cut away today to a skirmish at the doors. SS was 'escorting' the trouble makers out.

I am a Cruz voter, but Trump is better than any Democrat currently being mentioned for 2016.

even as the crowd of 10,000 predicted by the Trump campaign did not appear to materialize

This newspaper continues to be a joke. They had to change venues the crowd was so large and even at that venue huge numbers were not able to get in because there were so many people there, and this paper reports it as though it was a light turnout.

I like Cruz as well, but if he doesn’t catch fire with a lot more folks, he’s not going to make the cut!

Funny, I haven’t been a Trump supporter, but I put my Mary’s card in the shredder. Companies need to stop the p.c. crap. Further, Starbucks says they don’t want the business of persons who don’t endorse gay marriage. Bye, Starbucks.

No sense reporting on the same people time after time. They are hired and show up when called upon. No news there.
