On Friday's edition of PBS NewsHour, The New York Times' conservative columnist, said Republicans should publicly object to GOP candidate for president Donald Trump's "xenophobia" and "nativism."
"What Trump said is the dictionary definition of xenophobia, nativism," Brooks said.
Brooks admonished Trump, responding with an anecdotal observation of the PBS NewsHour parking lot.
"He had a factually inaccurate statement that generalized about a whole group of people, inaccurately, in a slurring manner," Brooks said. "We have got a parking lot right out here at the NewsHour where we brought a bunch of immigrants. And when you pull up, theyre not trying to rape you. Theyre not trying to sell drugs. Theyre trying to paint your backyard or back porch."
Brooks said if only Republicans were able to quell the "anti-immigration" "talk radio" part of the party the party and just "rediscover" the immigration policies of former Republican presidential nominees like Bob Dole, John McCain and George W. Bush their problems would solved.
"The party has wandered into an anti-immigration or an anti-immigration reform direction as a result of the rise of the talk radio part of the party," Brooks observed.
"But that part of the party is waning, frankly, and I think it will be very possible for Jeb Bush or Rubio, whoever the nominee is, to be where McCain was and to be where George W. Bush was," Brooks predicted.
"What matters is that whether the Republican Party rediscovers where George W. Bush was on immigration, where John McCain was on immigration, where a lot of where Bob Dole where a lot of previous nominees have been," Brooks said.

Oh, so NOW they love Bush.
So that thing about John Ellis Bush’s Mexican wife was somewhat accurate?
In a sane world, someone like Brooks would have ended his career with his asinine “pant crease” comment about Obama being a great President.
IT’s not a sane world.
Is David still having an orgasm over the crease in Obola’s pants?
“What matters is that whether the Republican Party rediscovers where George W. Bush was on immigration, where John McCain was on immigration, where a lot of where Bob Dole where a lot of previous nominees have been,” Brooks said.
Yep, the GOP needs to provide the amnesty nominee that Mr. Brooks employer has paid for.
The Cheap Labor Express has spent millions to prevent the citizens from stopping the importation of cheap labor.
The GOP will cease to exist if they persist.
Is this the same guy who chooses Presidents based on his Pants ?
I relish watching his ilk squirm if Trump or Cruz get the nomination.
“But that part of the party is waning, frankly, and I think it will be very possible for Jeb Bush or Rubio, whoever the nominee is, to be where McCain was and to be where George W. Bush was,” Brooks predicted.
If GWB had come out for amnesty before he did in 2006 he would not have won either election.
McCain and Romney were designated losers.
Yeb Bush and Marco Rubberio are designated losers.
Because amnesty is a losing issue. It puts the GOP on the opposite side as 65-70% of the citizens, not to mention 80% of their base.
David Brooks is not delusional, he’s paid for.
“Oh, so NOW they love Bush.”
Yea, I caught that too. Nothing good to say about Bush until AFTER he’s no longer a threat.
Not on his tailor, specifically, but on his dry cleaner...
Really.
Don’t worry, they will go back to hating him soon.
I watched a tiny bit of David Brooks Friday night, as much as I could take. He had this amused, snickering expression on his face the whole time. He is touted as conservative, although I have never personally heard him espouse anything that is conservative.
Ten bucks says that the only dark skinned people who get within 5 miles of his home are landscapers and nannies.
Just like liberals loved Bob Dole AFTER he lost to Clinton.
David who?
Brooks, like so many of the GOPe are having cognitive dissonance over how Trump has resonated with so many people.
Name calling is a part of the Democratic play book. Is that the best the NYT can do? Where is the substance?
We just watched todays Trump rally in Phoenix.
Trump went straight at Jeb Bush and if the press plays it on TV without their usual dishonest editing Jeb Bush just got a knockout blow.
Donald Trump can hit you hard. He is a great speaker, and very smart.
