What a trio of him, Alec Guinness, and David Lean.
Surprised he would still be living in Cairo after all of his success. RIP.
Just saw Mackenna's Gold a couple of weeks ago. Great Actor.............Thanks for the memories, Sir, Rest In Peace..................
I never heard anything about his politics. I always liked the roles he played and his performances.
One thing that really impressed me years about was a time when he was no longer getting any good roles, so he took out a large ad in a large entertainment periodical as I recall. I believe after that he did get some roles and somewhat back on track.
Let’s also not forget his iconic role as Agent Cedric in the movie “Top Secret”!
I used to read his Bridge column. His skill was mind boggling.
In case anyone is curious, he was born in Egypt to a Melkite Catholic family of Lebanese descent.
At one time he was given a death sentence by fatwa because he had kissed a “Jewess”, Barbara Streisand, in “Funny Girl.”
Sad, I had no idea he was a bridge genius. Too often we only find out the full extent of people’s accomplishments after they have gone.
RIP Yuri,
You had a gift.
he was raised Catholic, but converted to islam as an adult.
i’ve never felt the same about him since i learned that. i guess now he sees the error of his ways... a bit too late though.
i just watched him in The Night of the Generals the other day. a very curious movie.
From Lawrence of Arabia: “It is written”
“Somewhere my Love...”
One of my favorite movies is “Hidalgo” and I loved Sharif in his role as Shiekh Riyadh. Classic good looks and star power to boot.
One of the greats.
Dr. Zhivago is a classic.
R.I.P.
Heart attack took him in Dr Zhivagoim as well.
RIP Omar
