Disney has just release its first trailer from its new film The Finest Hours, based on the remarkable true story of “the greatest small boat rescue in U.S. Coast Guard history.”

The film tells the story of the SS Pendleton, a 10,448 gross ton “T2″ tanker which broke in half during a fierce nor’easter while off the coast of Cape Cod on February 18, 1952.

But how does Disney manage to get some PC propaganda into the film?

Surely someone back then was oppressed.

Disney will probably depict the storm as an early example of man-made climate change.

You beat me to it. I thought “if it sounds value affirming, drinking game for every time they stick the audience in the back”.

Egad I hate those fake New England accents. The actors try too hahd. You actually only run into the real hard core accents like that in Revere and other communities along the North Shore. It is quite a bit more subtle elsewhere in MA.

So a little late but got the book from the library after seeing the trailer. Will go see the movie but I see the following possible liberties being taken based on the trailer.

Miriam Webber: The trailer makes it seem they are still dating/engaged at the time of the rescue and she comes into the station raising Cain over Bernie going on the rescue. In reality they were already married and she was home sick the entire time.

The ships involved: In reality two ships were split in two that night. The Fort Mercer (the crew were rescued by Coast Guard cutters) and the Pendleton (where Webber's crew rescued the sailors in the stern). The trailer seems to have elements of both ships on the single ship shown. Don't know if they will show that there were two tankers in distress that night or combine it all into one ship.

Either way, I know movies have always taken liberties with history (especially beloved Disney "historical" dramas like Davy Crockett and the Swamp Fox) and look forward to seeing a good film about a great service.
