A gun belonging to a federal agent was used to kill a 32-year-old woman on a San Francisco pierlast week, reports revealed Tuesday as Hillary Clinton called out the city for releasing the suspect from jail in April.
Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, 45, admitted to killing Kathryn Steinle in a 45-minute jailhouse interview with KGO, which also first reported the gun's stunning provenance.
Lopez-Sanchez said he was on sleeping pills when he found the gun wrapped in a T-shirt on the ground next to his leg while sitting on a bench on July 1.
The gun went off three times when Lopez-Sanchez grabbed it on Pier 14, he told KGO.
The felon claims he kicked the weapon into the bay, lit a cigarette and walked off, unaware the gunfire struck someone.
Steinle was shot in the back as her father looked on and died at the hospital.
Lopez-Sanchez was arrested an hour later.
The .40 caliber handgun, which was not the a government-issued weapon, was stolen during a downtown car burglary in June, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The agent it belonged to was not named.

I am saddened to hear that her father looked on, then died at the hospital. It must have been fatal, having observed something that shocking.
