Cardinal Wuerl: Same-sex marriage ruling is ‘law of the land’
WTOP.com ^ | July 5, 2015 | Jamie Forzato

WASHINGTON — The District’s top Catholic leader has weighed in on the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage.

“The law of the land is the law of the land,” says Archbishop of Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl. “We certainly follow what the law says. That doesn’t mean we change the word of God. That doesn’t mean we change the scriptures, or the church’s millennia-long tradition of what marriage is.”

Everyone is welcome to the faith, Wuerl says: “Nobody is turned away because of their sexual identity, because of their race because of their ethnic background. And are we not all struggling to live the gospel?”

The Catholic church teaching will not change, but Cardinal Wuerl says Pope Francis has been more inclusive.

“He keeps saying, ‘Go out. Go out and meet people where they are. And in that encounter, walk with them, accompany them,'” Wuerl continues. “I think that’s what the church is saying. We all need to walk together as we try to make our way closer and closer to God.”

” How is he *obeying* this law?”

” The law of the land is the law of the land,” says Archbishop of Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl. “We certainly follow what the law says”

Perhaps he’s preparing to come out of the closet?

Yes, I'm afraid that the door to the RCC clergy closet is about to open.

Gay weddings at Catholic Churches, abortions at Catholic hospitals?
Stop any reference to homosexuality as a sin in homilies and Catholic teachings?
This was a useless and vapid statement. Of course, we all know this because we have a rogue Supreme Court ruling that declares that gay marriage is the law of the land.
But what is this invenerate, invertebrate bishop actually mean and what’s he going to do about it? Is he going to draw a line in the sand?

These so-called leaders need to be shut down, insulted, and shunned from society
and the Church. No, there's no room for this in the church. All the
go-along-to-get-along BS coming from the far left churches are the
enablers of communism.

Just Damn these people!

Hey Cardinal. Shed the red bunting and say this: “Although gay marriage is the law of the land, as the stupid expression says, it is not the law of the Church, and so we will go to jail before we perform gay marriages “.

He’s right in that the Church is not a Shrine for Saints, but rather a hospital for sinners.......

That said he should be decrying this assault on the basic foundation of any society/nation.....the family unit, using loud and angry words from a lofty bully pulpit

For hundreds/thousands of years people were married through arrangements by the parents...”Love” had nothing to do with it. To say two men can/should marry because they are “in love” is pure b.s.

Marriage equality?????? When gays can pro-create within their marriage let me know and I’ll support their marriage. Until then don’t tell me that their union is a matter of equality......If it can’t produce children, the very basic function/purpose of a marriage, then it ain’t a marriage.....it’s just “legalized” sodomy......

A quick look at my states “sexual offenders” list reveals 99% were convicted under our Sodomy Statutes. Guess there won’t be any more of those convictions seeing as Sodomy is now legal as per the SCOTUS. That’ll make the child perverts happy!

I’m confused by the “law of the land” argument. Can someone please help me out and quote the specific federal laws and statutes that makes perverted marriage the “law of the land”?

This ruling is ‘Fraud by Court’ and ‘Perversion of Justice’

We should all start using those terms.

How?

https://vimeo.com/93079367

We acknowledge that this is a law (and we pray for it to be overturned as other awful laws have been in our history) but we do NOT have to obey it in any way that tramples on our right to the free practice of our religion. The film I have linked to demonstrates the way our Church (I’m Catholic) should practice what we believe to be the Truth of Jesus Christ.

I'm confused also but recognize that this is just what liberals want us to think. The Supreme Court has no authority to write law. This law does not exist legally. Laws must go through a legislative process by legislators who were voted into office by citizens who vote. Repeating the "law of the land" argument often enough only solidifies what the libs want us to accept.

You’re projecting your sentiments on him. In other words you’re tooling yourself.

He said “We certainly follow what the law says.”

“The part where the boy-raping monsters are NOT told to; “Repent, go forth, and sin no more.”

You projected that into your own mind...he was correct in saying all are welcome to come to Jesus...

“We do not follow the law of the land when it conflicts with the Law of God. That simple. I’m not catholic but thats the rules for any church that claims to be Christian.”

I agree with you but that is not the only path available. The Cardinal was not incorrect theologically at all...What is Caesar’s give to Caesar. I am not the I Will NOT Obey crowd myself...

Really? My own mind?

That’s not what happened with the queer “priests” They just sent them somewhere else to recruit a fresh crop of kids.

Let’s see where the Red Whirly Bird (or the “Pope”) comes down hard on the faggot child molesters.

Hey makes total sense why the supremes voted this way. Now the church is not liable for pervert priests taking advantage of post pubescent boys.... Might say this is most profitable for the boys in collars. They call it love, in the name of their father.
