Republicans cast into turmoil as Donald Trump rides the populist surge
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | Juloy 5th, 2015 | By Philip Sherwell

For Donald Trump the entrepreneur, it was a damaging week. Two major television networks severed ties, Macy’s dropped his clothing line and Carlos Slim, the even richer Mexican tycoon, ended a joint venture with him.

But for Donald Trump the inveterate showman and Republican challenger for president, the week was a triumph as he climbed in the opinion polls and dominated media coverage, despite the backlash against his decision to condemn Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug traffickers.

“Wow, Huffington Post just stated that I am number one in the polls of Republican candidates,” the brash billionaire bragged as the week closed, citing the liberal media outlet that has been a platform for many of the strongest attacks on him. “Thank you, but the work has just begun!”

Mr Trump was touting his first place in an average of 105 polls. Of the 14 candidates who have declared, Trump topped the field with 13.6 per cent support to 13.3 per cent for Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor and son and brother of two past presidents.

Last night I watched the Newsmax interview with Donald Trump. He lambasted Jebbers also for his influence in having John Roberts selected to the SCOTUS. Trump called Roberts. ‘a disaster’ for his rulings saving ObamaCare and Jeb of poor judgement. What true conservative can argue with that?

Like others, I also appreciate Trump's "wrecking ball" style and how he has shaken up this otherwise flaccid field of candidates (even Cruz has disappointed so far).

However, I still can't get around the fact that Trump recently declared Bill Clinton to be his "favorite" president. That profoundly disturbs me and so far I have not gotten a reasonable explanation of why he would say that (as recently as June 17th).

He was asked who was his favorite in the last 20 years.

Pretty slim pickins there.

I thought he was a clown—an ego driven entertainer—but, based on the reaction of the RINO-Republicans and Liberals and their fake Outrage—I will support him AND Sen. Ted Cruz who took a bold stand to speak for Trump! In Shakespears Plays the Fool is always the wisest man in the play—maybe so with Trump. For now, and for his comments on illegals, I support him. I want him to poll number one—they will do anything to wreck him! I hope he has good body guards—I would not put assassination beyond the enemies of Freedom.

Orange hair and comb over?
Meh, I really don’t care.

Same here. Go to the Telegraph's site and see all the non-flattering pictures of him they post. Typically, they have no comments section where you can point that out.

A question for all the Trump-bashers here: In the unlikely event that the election is between Hillary and Trump, which one will you vote for?

You’re getting a raving ass that agrees with you on a few points.

If that’s enough to garner any praise or consideration for public office from you, that is your right, but to me the ass part outshines everything else about him.

Actually, you are 100% dead on. The problem with such a guy who doesn’t have a clear ideological core is that often his solutions will begin to contradict each other. To an extent, FDR was this kind of guy-—a leftist but malleable by lieutenants based on the problem, which is why he could work for nine years to crush business, then turn around in wartime and unleash I, even throw money at it.

“Is he running interference for Hitlery by dragging down the Republican Party?”

Are you stupid or did you just fall on your head? Drag down the Republican party? The Republican party is circling the drain. The Republican party is corruption central. The Republican party is open for sale to Big Business and the Chamber of Commerce 24/7. No bribe too small. No betrayal of the republican base too large.

Trump may be the only thing that will save the Republican party and the American public from 8 more years of a pinko commie in the Whitehouse and a turncoat legislature to do their bidding.

I’m not fighting the comment.

Jeb Bush should get some pushback. Jeb has a record but in this case Trump was hitting his brother’s selection.

But I find Trump suspicious and I find Newsmax suspicious frankly. Newsmax came out of the Scaife family that the Clinton machine demonized years ago but this same family sent a donation in more recent times to the Clinton Foundation.

I would much prefer a pragmatist with an ideological leaning than a pure ideologue of any stripe. And trump definitely supports capitalism and private property. (Not real sure about his stand on social issues.)

Pure ideology has never proven to work, it’s one of the reason you never see a pure libertarian, or pure capitalist society. And when it’s tried as in the USSR or the Nazis, it has proven an unmitigated disaster.

Even Reagan, probably the most conservative president we’ve ever had, was happy to get half a loaf and go for more later.

The problem with the current crop of RINO that supposedly lead us, is not that they compromise whatever principle they might have, is that they surrender without firing a shot!

With Trump you can be sure that ain’t going to happen, he’s written the book on making a deal.

I know his ego can be hard to take at times, but it can be a virtue as well. A Trump America could be a 5 star place, as are most of his properties.

The other thing about Trump is that his blunt, undiplomatic way of telling the truth is giving voice to millions of us that have been yearning for someone who tells the unvarnished truth and doesn’t back down at the first sign of a push back. This is tapping a reservoir that’s ready to burst, like the initial outburst from the tea partiers.

I’m still for Cruz, but Trump has risen rather fast on my radar.

I think your missing my point. The rest of these politicians only seem to agree with me when they want my vote.

Maybe Cruz is different. I haven’t decided yet.
