How can one make a list like that without Thomas Jefferson?

Yes, he had his faults, but his writings and thoughts shaped America more so than some of the others.

Henry was not an advocate of a Constitution setting up a more powerful federal government.

I believe his exact words were: "I smell a rat!"

And for at least a hundred years after his death, political arguments could be settled by the mere fact that “Washington said so.”

************************************************************************************************************************************************************

And for the past hundred years, DESENT has been stiffled by the words, “Washington (D C ) said so”. Backed of course by a huge armed federal police force and largest army of bureaucrats (some armed)in the history of man.

It came much later as country was reuniting but I’d add Frederick Douglass...his July 4th speech is brilliance and backs up the Constitution and BOR...and we need to remember, blacks in this country have been taught to hate it...saying founding fathers is a turn off...another is Booker T Washington...genius and polar opposite to the Marxist DuBois.

Flame me if u want but I want our country back...yield a bit to unite...look these two up and you’ll see things you like. There is a reason the public’s screwels barely mention these two.

George Washington Carver could be added to that list.

I kinda hate these "badass" type articles, but figured you'd want to see it. I've got one in a tab that I'd not posted, about the Wright Brothers being badass.

I like the list, but I wonder what the definition of “badass” actually is.

Usually it implies some sort of physical intimidating action, especially when talking around the subject of war.

But either way, Washington would have to be #1.

And I like the conclusion that he should be the first 9 on the greatest pres list! LOL

Jefferson would turn up on a list of words over deeds.

He ran away as governor from Richmond and gave it up without so much as a plan.

He did not openly give up slaves though he said he would.

The best thing Jefferson did was get the LA Purchase and set out to slap down the Barbary pirates (others to fight). And that was well after the RevWar.

John Adams is very underrated in all categories.

Whether badass, or contributor, or most important, or president, etc.

I think unfortunately, his later presidency tarnished his image.

Meanwhile, Jefferson gets plenty just because he wrote nice words. Style over substance.

On May 16th, 1771 The Battle of Alamance took place in North Carolina.

2,500 Regulators fought 1,000 militia troops lead by British Governor William Tryon. The British won.

After the battle one Regulator was hanged. A few days later six additional men were hanged in Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina.

The British did have a habit hanging people.

The upcountry of the Carolinas was especially troublesome for the British before and during the War for Independence. Today, Charlotte, North Carolina is proud of Cornwallis calling it "A Hornet's Nest of Rebellion" after local militias defeated his attempt in September of 1780 to seize and hold the area using his regular troops. Costly battles and harassment helped lead to the failure of Cornwallis's southern campaign and his fateful May, 1781 decision to seek refuge at Yorktown on the Chesapeake in Virginia.

To add another not well-known figure of SC and colleague of Marion - Wade Hampton. An early settler of the area around Greenville, he gave the Brits a run for their money which infuriated them. He was later killed in an Indian massacre. His grand son, Wade III, was a wealthy plantation owner, raised Hampton’s Legion for the Confederate forces, fought through the entire war, lost a son and a brother on the field and later served as Senator and Gov of SC and promoted black rights...great, bad ass dudes all.
