Some years ago I was having dinner with a friend, when his 30 something son joined us. Son is a cop and was Ranger, served in Iraq, twice.

Over beers he admitted a few things:

1) "we" (meaning the cops) are the only thing separating them (Compton thugs) from coming into your town (Long Beach) and f'n you up.

2) Often we know someone is guilty, we just don't have a case for the DA. Our job is to then make their life a living hell for the 48 hours we can hold em.

Don't like it? see number one.

“2) Often we know someone is guilty”

Funny, I thought we lived in a country where the presumption of innocence trumps what a cop “knows.” Cops can’t be judges., This guy may think he’s “protecting” the citizens of Long Beach, but he’s breaking the law! Your friend’s son should probably find another line of work.
PS I have a good friend who was LAPD in San Pedro (for ten years). He quit because of these kinds of illegal tactics, and was unwilling to abuse people because what the cops “thought.”
