UPDATE: 7-foot shark pulls man under water Ocracoke Island in NC, victim airlifted to hospital

A 68-year-old man was pulled under the water by a shark Wednesday in the Outer Banks — this time on Ocracoke Island.

The man was swimming outside the first breaker about 25 feet offshore, directly in front of the lifeguard stand, when he encountered a gray shark about 7 feet long, Hyde County officials said. A lifeguard saw the shark pull the man under the water. He suffered several bites to his rib cage, hip, lower leg and both hands.

A witness told CNN he saw a “trail of blood from water to the sand.”

The victim was able to swim out of the water, where a doctor who happened to be in the area was able to stabilize him, said Justin Gibbs with Hyde County EMS. The man, who was visiting from Massachusetts, was then airlifted off the island to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C. The man was stable and alert, officials said.

The percent of deaths for people that walk in front of car on a freeway: 100%

The Eastern U.S. has experienced, I think, higher levels of rain this spring and summer than usual. My belief is that the rivers that run out from this area are supplying more nutrients to the marine ecosystem than usual, with a corresponding increase in small organisms that feed the things that the sharks prey upon; hence an increase in shark activity. Whatever the actual case, this kind of thing ought to be predictable. And of course it’s up to people to decide if they want to take the risk, which is actually fairly small.

"They are indeed...aerial photos are stunning sometime. Around Cape Lookout, which is part of the Beaufort Morehead City Atlantic Beach area, it’s shark infested from aerial looks...."

Seasonal water warming brings in the big boys to feed on species which thrive in the surf/close-to-shore environment.

A few weeks ago, I threw out the idea of an outer banks vacation. I haven’t been there since I was a kid.

Up until a week ago, the spouse is wavering. I would still like to go.

The last time there was a lot of shark attack publicity my husband (then boyfriend) exclaimed at the firehouse at which he was stationed that the shark attack publicity is silly. It's their habitat. If you go in it, you could be bitten. He told the other firefighters that shark attacks are not news and it was pretty sad that the MSM only had this to report. He went on and on about all the other tragedies and injustices that could be the topic of MSM conversation - but no, they have to report that animals are acting like animals.

A few minutes later some muslims flew a passenger plane into one of the Twin Towers.

The entire department has forbidden my husband from commenting on these shark attacks lol! They are a superstitious bunch. With this pres, however, I fully expect an attack soon. Not so lol.

That's what I told my brother who is vacationing at Amelia Island next month.

He and his wife plan on taking their ocean kayaks and frankly a bull shark could make a meal of a kayaker by simply taking a small leap (which they frequently do when chasing prey).

All that is quite true, but I would rather take my chances with a cow.

Very unlikely a cow will attack me, unseen, from below.
Highly unlikely a cow will sever limbs with a single bite.
Extremely unlikely I would go into a pasture or barn without knowing where the cow is.

A shark, on the other hand, is silent, may attack from any direction, and can end a life with a single bite.
I stay away from places where I can not see the dangers.

All that does *not* mean that I trust the cow. (insert cute emotiwhatever here)

I was just going to mention this...the week or two before the 911 attacks were full of reports of shark attacks in NC. We even had one in VA Beach, which is very rare. Every time you turned on the news they were blabbing about shark attacks, until about 8:45 am 9-11-01.
