Greek debt crisis: In Athens, scavenging from bins has become a way to survive

Piled high with rubbish congealing in the summer heat, municipal dustbin R21 on Athens' Sofokleous Street does not look or smell like a treasure trove. But for Greece's growing army of dustbin scavengers, its deposits of rubbish from nearby stores and grocery shops make it a regular point of call. "Sometimes I'll find scrap metal that I can sell, although if I see something that looks reasonably safe to eat, I'll take it," said Nikos Polonos, 55, as he sifted through R21's contents on Tuesday morning. "Other times you might find paper, cans, and bottles that you can get money for if you take them back to the shops for recycling." • Greece crisis live: Latest news as Greeks submit audacious new two-year bail-out application but promise to default tonight One reason for R21's popularity is because it is just down the road from a church soup kitchen, where the drug-addicted, the poor and homeless queue up for meals three times daily.

A little preview of Democrat socialism, dysfunctional government, no accountability, and finally....fatal debt.

Riches to rags: Olga Onassis, 90, has become a symbol of the modern Greek tragedy that is playing out with the eurozone as she rummages through rubbish for anything of use

All we have to do is look back at Sandy. It took a mere 72 hours and people were dumpster diving. Those dumpsters will be picked clean or rotten in a week given any locale and then people with enough strength will be on the move looking for others to pillage.
My personal assumption, it will take approx six weeks “here” to survive the lone wolves as they starve out un-organized. It is the organized parties that follow where good folks will need to band together.

"Coming to American once the dominoes start falling."

Yes. It could be even worse than "scavenging from bins," if the U.S. economy is near the last to collapse. One might encounter more grisly scenes. For example, one may well see a former public school teacher gnawing on the skull of a former land use planning office administrator.

"I love greek food but stinky old octopus?"

Or a raw mutton sandwich with special spices...for real.

Yeah, I know. Just an observation really. I have little doubt they are eating from the dumpsters in Greece and have been for some time.

SHE looks like any old bag lady scavenging for cast-offs in the rubbish as the world looks the other way.

But this is no ordinary woman - she is Olga Onassis, 90, a woman linked by marriage to one of the richest dynasties in the world.

She has now fallen, like her country, on desperate times.

She is a regular at a church soup kitchen in the Greek capital, Athens, and roots around in the overflowing garbage containers of the city for clothes.

German newspaper Bild spoke with her this week as her debt-ridden nation lurched into violence and chaos once more.

Olga Onassis’s husband Georgios was the cousin of Aristotle Onassis, the fabulously wealth Greek shipping tycoon who married President John F. Kennedy’s widow Jackie in 1968. Theirs was a life of splendour and opulence before his death in 1975. But Olga has not received anything from the family in more than six years.

She told Bild: ‘’I get nothing more from the family. I survive on one pension only and that was cut to €300 ($A402) a month because of the crisis. I cannot believe what has happened to my country.’’

Yes it is. Americans would be wise to lean the art of dumpster diving.

Greece is coming to America too.
