New York Times Columnist: ‘Time To End Tax Exemptions for Religious Institutions’

From Mark Oppenheimer in Time:

Two weeks ago, with a decision in Obergefell v. Hodges on the way, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) 100% of Utah introduced the First Amendment Defense Act, which ensures that religious institutions won’t lose their tax exemptions if they don’t support same-sex marriage. Liberals tend to think Sen. Lee’s fears are unwarranted, and they can even point to Justice Anthony Kennedy’s opinion in Friday’s case, which promises “that religious organizations and persons [will be] given proper protection.”

But I don’t think Sen. Lee is crazy. In the 1983 Bob Jones University case, the court ruled that a school could lose tax-exempt status if its policies violated “fundamental national public policy.” So far, the Bob Jones reasoning hasn’t been extended to other kinds of discrimination, but someday it could be. I’m a gay-rights supporter who was elated by Friday’s Supreme Court decision — but I honor Sen. Lee’s fears.

I don’t, however, like his solution. And he’s not going to like mine. Rather than try to rescue tax-exempt status for organizations that dissent from settled public policy on matters of race or sexuality, we need to take a more radical step. It’s time to abolish, or greatly diminish, their tax-exempt statuses.

Just got in a multihour long FB debate with my lesbo niece about SSM. At the end she let it slip that forcing Christian churches to marry gays is the goal. Stupid biatch.

Doesn’t he understand that Churches by their nature don’t generate profits, because they don’t offer any for pay product or service?

They need to realize that we really could shut this government down.

We already knew this was the next move a-holes. Guess what this means for libtards? No we can no longer feed you, pay your utility bills when they are about to be cut off, put you up in a motel overnight when you need a place to rest or sleep or any other charity because you just shot yourself in the foot by being a douche and making it where we won’t have the extra funds to assist you now.

Tax exempt organizations can't lobby politicians. Be careful what you ask for....you might get it. No taxation without representation. Churches would be free to lobby the politicians and there would be no room to deny them access. That second half of the First Amendment may be a sticking point Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;. A tax paying church is no longer cowering in fear of losing the tax exempt status. That is the sword of Damocles that keeps them toeing the line. They would be free to operate precisely by the dictates of their religious practices including limiting a religious marriage recognition to a single man / single woman as has been common practice for centuries.

I would oppose pulling the tax exempt status from religious organizations, but if that occurs, they get a seat at the table with every other taxpayer.

Justempty your accounts, move out of a house, and don’t pay your taxes. En masse. Millions at the same time. They’d drop the homos like a hot potato.

You fix the charitable issue by not passing the money through the religious organization. That does mess with your deductions for charitable purposes via church.

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar

13Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. 14They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial taxb to Caesar or not? 15Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”

But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” 16They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

17Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”

And they were amazed at him.

How about we just get rid of “tax exempt” all together.

Things like Planned Parenthood and the other ghouls you fund with my money make me sick as well as more than 100,000,000 other Americans.

How about we agree than all of your tax exempt orgs start paying taxes at the same time the churches pay up. I could live with that.

We’ll then take bets ...

Will churches survive with the members donating to pay the tax bills or will your little concentration camps for the unborn survive being funded by food stamps and leftover minutes on Obamaphones?

I can’t believe this ... all of this hate even after SCOTUS “legitimized” homosexual anal sex. I didn’t see this coming (sarcasm)

It must be a sad, petty life to let something like that matter so much! They really must hurt when they try to fall asleep at night ... I’d be that angry too if something that sickening was at the center of my life.

Considering how the Roman Catholic Church is now shilling for illegal aliens and global warming, they should be taxed.
