SpaceX hopes third time a charm in landing historic booster rocket
CNNMoney ^ | June 27, 2015 | Amanda Barnett

Once again, SpaceX will try to recover a very expensive part of its rocket after launching it into space.

If SpaceX succeeds in recovering the first stage of its rocket after its 10:21 a.m. ET launch on Sunday at Florida's Cape Canaveral, it will be a historical achievement. It will push space travel further toward a future in which people, satellites and other items can be inexpensively launched into orbit.

Go Elon?

You mean “Go taxpayer subsidized, lefty campaign funder Musk?”

At least thank the folks who pick up the tab.

Robert Heinlein would/is so proud and happy. Despite all the socialist creepozoids throughout, free market actors all over are pushing the envelope, and even forcing government entities to compete for present and future space dollars and contracts. As Heinlein well knew, someday the Earth will no longer be habitable (not from GloBull Gloaming, just the natural solar processes). Humans will inhabit other planets and moons, and, God willing, other solar systems.

Musk is going to end up saving the taxpayers a lot of money as well as his customers.

Like Reagan, he believes the future should be better than the past.

...

That could be, and given enough time we’ll probably be able to change the orbit of the Earth, too.

Reagan got $5 Billion for his efforts from taxpayers?

Citing Reagan to justify crony capitalism is a non-starter.

Musk’s Spacex blew up 2 minutes into its trajectory.

How does that save money — in the short or long run.

And if you are smart enough to pick winners and losers — let’s see your stock picks. Otherwise, let the market (free choice of individual consumers) pick the winners.

Where does the $5 billion figure come from?

And it’s not even clever to pick the one failure to judge the entire program. Has there ever been a rocket launcher that didn’t have a failure? Is there anyone that can put a pound of cargo into orbit any cheaper than SpaceX?

Where does the $5 billion figure come from?

Google “5 billion musk” and you will find Los Angeles Times and Breitbart articles.

Lots can be done with 5 billion.

He owes a “Thank you” to every taxpayer.

I did look up the articles and since this is a thread about SpaceX, the LATimes admitted that almost all of SpaceX’s money from the government comes from contracts, not subsidies.

As far as my referencing Reagan, that applies to Musk believing that the future should be better than the past, and that his companies produce better products for less money. So far, that’s true for SpaceX.

Spacex and Musk are the beneficiaries of goverment largesse in the amount of $5 Billion.

That is a fact.

He returns the favor with his political contributions.

This is different from Solyndra? Of course not.

I too believe the future will be better, but I do not believe the way to the better future is paved with crony capitalism. And neither did Reagan.

What you call largesse, everybody else calls a contract.

Here’s the article you told me to read in case anyone wants to take a look.

$5 billion in contracts?

Sure.

It’s Solyndra on wheels.

You didn’t even know about the $5 billion, now you say it is contracts?

I’m referencing the LATimes article you told me to find. I even provided a link.

Your reference to “wheels” tells me you’re talking about Tesla. I’m talking about SpaceX. I thought I made that clear.

$5 billion in public money, taxpayer money.

You didn’t know about it until I pointed it out to you.

His companies have government funding or government contracts. Who competed but did not have those benefits?

His contracts weren’t favored because he was an Obama donor, unlike the Solyndra folks?

He is a recipient of $5 billion in taxpayer funds, and you haven’t been able to deny that. You didn’t even know about it until it was pointed out. It is easy to succeed in your multiple endeavors when you don’t have to earn a profit and you are on the take.

$5 billion. Fact.

$5 billion in public money, taxpayer money.

...

The government buys services from SpaceX. Like everybody else, they pay for the services. Your contention was they were subsidies. They aren’t. You were wrong.

Thanks for pointing out the article.
