The mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, says he thinks a statue of Confederate General and Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest should be removed from its location at a city park.
In a statement emailed to The Associated Press on Wednesday, Mayor A C Wharton Jr. said he would like to see the statue removed from Health Sciences Park. Wharton said the graves of Forrest and his wife, also located at the park, should be relocated as well.
Health Sciences Park was called Forrest Park until the City Council voted in February 2013 to change the name. It also changed the name of Confederate Park and Jefferson Davis Park.
It was not immediately clear if the City Council would consider moving the statue.
Lawmakers have already called for the removal of a bust of Forrest from an alcove in the state Senate chambers.
The suspect in last week's shooting deaths of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina, was seen in photos brandishing the Confederate battle flag as a symbol of hate.
I don't know what sarcasm is anymore. I read and hear stuff thinking it's a spoof or lampoon. Reading articles and comments I'm thinking, are they pulling my leg??? How do I respond?? Is this legitimate? I love deadpan sarcasm style humor, just not when it becomes reality.
Unexpected
My thoughts also. The powers that rule knew they won when we accepted , with just a little griping, obamacare being forced upon us.
At his last public appearance, he made what the New York Times described as a “friendly speech” during which, when offered a bouquet of flowers by a black woman, he accepted them as a token of reconciliation between the races and espoused a radically progressive (for the time) agenda of equality and harmony between black and white Americans. His speech was as follows:
“Ladies and Gentlemen I accept the flowers as a memento of reconciliation between the white and colored races of the southern states. I accept it more particularly as it comes from a colored lady, for if there is any one on God’s earth who loves the ladies I believe it is myself. ( Immense applause and laughter.) This day is a day that is proud to me, having occupied the position that I did for the past twelve years, and been misunderstood by your race. This is the first opportunity I have had during that time to say that I am your friend. I am here a representative of the southern people, one more slandered and maligned than any man in the nation.I will say to you and to the colored race that men who bore arms and followed the flag of the Confederacy are, with very few exceptions, your friends. I have an opportunity of saying what I have always felt - that I am your friend, for my interests are your interests, and your interests are my interests. We were born on the same soil, breathe the same air, and live in the same land. Why, then, can we not live as brothers? I will say that when the war broke out I felt it my duty to stand by my people. When the time came I did the best I could, and I don’t believe I flickered. I came here with the jeers of some white people, who think that I am doing wrong. I believe that I can exert some influence, and do much to assist the people in strengthening fraternal relations, and shall do all in my power to bring about peace. It has always been my motto to elevate every man- to depress none. (Applause.) I want to elevate you to take positions in law offices, in stores, on farms, and wherever you are capable of going.I have not said anything about politics today. I don’t propose to say anything about politics. You have a right to elect whom you please; vote for the man you think best, and I think, when that is done, that you and I are freemen. Do as you consider right and honest in electing men for office. I did not come here to make you a long speech, although invited to do so by you. I am not much of a speaker, and my business prevented me from preparing myself. I came to meet you as friends, and welcome you to the white people. I want you to come nearer to us. When I can serve you I will do so. We have but one flag, one country; let us stand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment. Use your best judgement in selecting men for office and vote as you think right. Many things have been said about me which are wrong, and which white and black persons here, who stood by me through the war, can contradict. I have been in the heat of battle when colored men, asked me to protect them. I have placed myself between them and the bullets of my men, and told them they should be kept unharmed. Go to work, be industrious, live honestly and act truly, and when you are oppressed I’ll come to your relief. I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for this opportunity you have afforded me to be with you, and to assure you that I am with you in heart and in hand.” (Prolonged applause.)
“The mayor of one of the most dangerous cities in Tennessee is worried about a grave and statue?”
I just read murder stats for all major metropolitan areas of the country, and Memphis is #1! And it is #1 by a wide margin. It beats out Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago!
So they will come after the grave of my great grandfather for figjting in the CW as well??????
Eff YOU! And the horse you rode in on!!!!!!!
You know, some people I didn't care for have died and had the audacity to be buried in a cemetery. I think I'll go dig them up and dump them in the forest so I won't be offend when I go in that cemetery. /s
WHEN DOES THIS STOP? Now, we are going to dig up people? I think Satan has taken control of many people in this country and their actions are snowballing every day into an outer space/other dimension/wormhole - I don't recognize this country as one I have lived in all these years.
Furthermore, I picked up a magazine at a grocery checkout counter today and it cost $10.00. A magazine is now $10? I put it back.
My house is normal but outside my house is a fourth dimension world.
Why are we beating around the bush banning symbols and icons? Why don’t we get down to brass tacks and just ban the actual source of slavery, the confederacy, and the Civil War: The Democratic Party.
NO.
Democrats are turning into North Koreans.
North Koreans think George Orwell’s book ‘Nineteen Eighty-four’ was a primer, not a dystopian warning about brutal, totalitarian political rule.
I wouldn’t stand by and accept moving union graves in our Muncie cemetery, for the sake of political idiocy, anymore than responding to that goal addressed to confederate graves in the south with anything but the contempt and derision it deserves.
It is important to keep in mind that the impetus for all this idiocy is a shooting by a deranged young man. It is ludicrous and a debacle; in other words, Democrat imbeciles are hard at work.
Moonbat Mayor who wants to dig up not only Forrest, but wants to dig up the man's wife for political gain.
What about Robert Byrd are they going to dig him up?
It’s rather amusing that this latest racial episode has so many Whites engaged in acts of public mast*rbation.
The Kleenex Corporation must be thrilled.
“mayor wharton, who is apparently a limp-wristed metrosexual faggot, flunked a qualifying test for the position of Nathan Bedford Forrest’s chamberpot cleaner. The Shinola portion of the test got him...”
Well Liberals are good at digging up bodies just to go and vote.
How ironic, that’s one of those comments I was talking about in 41.
Perhaps they will find the US Flag that Shiela Jackson Lee ooops (her name sounds very racist) stated it was planted on mars by our astronaunts. =)
[Oliver] Cromwell is thought to have suffered from malaria and from “stone”, a common term for urinary/kidney infections. In 1658 he was struck by a sudden bout of malarial fever, followed directly by illness symptomatic of a urinary or kidney complaint. The Venetian ambassador, who wrote regular dispatches to the Doge of Venice in which he included details of Cromwell’s final illness, was suspicious of the rapidity of Cromwell’s death. The decline may also have been hastened by the death of one of his daughters, Elizabeth Claypole, in August. He died aged 59 at Whitehall on Friday 3 September 1658, the anniversary of his great victories at Dunbar and Worcester. The most likely cause of Cromwell’s death was septicaemia following his urinary infection. He was buried with great ceremony, with an elaborate funeral based on that of James I, at Westminster Abbey, his daughter Elizabeth also being buried there.
He was succeeded as Lord Protector by his son Richard. Although not entirely without ability, Richard had no power base in either Parliament or the Army, and was forced to resign in May 1659, ending the Protectorate. There was no clear leadership from the various factions that jostled for power during the short lived reinstated Commonwealth, so George Monck, the English governor of Scotland, at the head of New Model Army regiments was able to march on London, and restore the Long Parliament. Under Monck’s watchful eye the necessary constitutional adjustments were made so that in 1660 Charles II could be invited back from exile to be king under a restored monarchy.
On 30 January 1661, (the 12th anniversary of the execution of Charles I), Cromwell’s body was exhumed from Westminster Abbey, and was subjected to the ritual of a posthumous execution, as were the remains of Robert Blake, John Bradshaw and Henry Ireton. (The body of Cromwell’s daughter was allowed to remain buried in the Abbey.) His disinterred body was hanged in chains at Tyburn, and then thrown into a pit. Cromwell’s severed head was displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall until 1685. Afterwards it allegedly was owned by various people and was publicly exhibited several times. Afterwards, the head changed hands several times, including its sale in 1814 to Josiah Henry Wilkinson, before eventually being buried beneath the floor of the antechapel at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in 1960. The exact position was not publicly disclosed, but as noted below a plaque marks the approximate location.
the Confederacy lost. To the victor the spoils of war.
anyone could’ve seen this coming since Leftists have been trying to do this for decades.
