The backlash against public use of Confederate flags has built quickly since nine parishioners were gunned down inside a South Carolina church last week.
Alabama removed the flag from its state capitol grounds Wednesday, and political leaders in Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee and North Carolina have moved to remove Confederate flag symbols from their state license plates. Wal-Mart, Amazon, Sears and eBay all have said they will stop selling the Confederate battle flag, viewed by many people as a symbol of racism and slavery.
But what about the other symbols of the Confederacy that live on in our everyday lives? What, for example, about the dozens of elementary, middle and high schools that bear the names of prominent Confederate leaders?
There are at least 188 such public and public charter schools nationwide, according to an analysis of federal data published by the Web site Vocativ. Many, but not all, are in the South.
And already, there are calls to rename some of them.
California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), sent a letter to the San Diego Unified School District calling on officials to rename an elementary school that honors Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
The flag in particular, and anyone associated with this army, in general, have been associated with intolerance, racism and hate, none of which have a place in our schools, Gonzalez wrote, according to San Diegos Fox 5 TV.
Gonzalez wrote that the elementary school is located in a vibrant, multiethnic community with a strong African-American presence that deserves a school named after someone we can all admire. ... Robert E. Lee is not that person.
Its not yet clear whether the push to remove symbols of the Confederacy will extend to school names, which can hold powerful sway with nostalgic alumni.

Yes. They should all be renamed after Rachel Dolezal.
Try to remove these names.

Beat me to it.
every ounce of white culture will ultimately be destroyed...
in my lifetime, probably another 20-30 yrs if I'm lucky, I will not be surprised if July 4th is no longer celebrated, that marching bands will play only show tunes, that placing flags on graveyards will be outlawed, etc etc...
I'm sure they'll go after Mt Rushmore...
With all the furor over flags, statues and license plates its like being in Communist China during what was called the “Cultural Revolution” of 50 years ago.
With the GOP Senate leader wanting to get that Jefferson Davis statue out of Kentucky’s State Capitol, perhaps its time to refer him as “Chairman Mao McConnell”.
No. To pursue purity in such a broadbased, aggressive manner is always a fool’s errand.
It’s stomach-turning, the hypocrisy.
Virtually every journalist and politician on this bandwagon (”I’m against slavery! Applaud me for my courage!!!”)is pro-abortion. The UNION has imposed abortion on all fifty states—and in over forty years, not a single governor has even whispered the word “secession.”
Sad that liberals have derailed the mourning of these good Christian people that were killed. I believe everyone of them that were killed would put their faith before their race.
Liberals and the media want to make their deaths about a flag and about race. I believe this does a disservice to those that lost their lives. Yes, I know race is a part of all this but it has more to do with the killer being a psycho nutcase.
Next step is to remove names of Republican Presidents, such as Eisenhower school - because of backlash against conservatives.
It was the media that started this anti white crusade
It is the news media driving this hysteria.
The news media used a single act by a single individual to take away our freedom of speech. If people dont see now that the media is the enemy and the problem I dont know when they will
That little moron didn’t do anything and if he did anything at all it was to get the media attention that the media bestows on any mass shooter
Levin has it right. We ought to go on the attack against the democrat party and their deep ties to the KKK, the evil flag, deep racial animus, and racist eugenic views on all who are not white.
We need to quit cowering and surrendering. It is way past time to take on this ugly ugly history of the far left
Murder is ultimately about hating people in one’s heart which is what the Good Book and the Founder of my Faith say.
Racism isn’t on my God’s Top 10 list, Murder is and racism is a definition of Murder by my God because it includes hating people in my heart and murdering them there before I would even take the physical action of killing them.
not a single governor has even whispered the word secession.
Isn’t that sad.
Here’s what I’m going to do. Probably won’t do any good but I’m trying. Maybe I’ll send one to Gregg Abbott asking for secession.

Don’t blame the liberals. It’s republican governors from the South that’s removing the flags every day.
Mississippi is going to change it’s flag.
Georgia will change it’s flag.
The state rep in Tennessee wants the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest removed from the rotunda. He’s walked past that bust for years and all of a sudden he thinks it doesn’t belong.
I’ve never seen a more shallow bunch of little wussies than those who make up the republican party.
Democrat liberals are no better than the Taliban and ISIS for wanting to destroy all history before Mohammad. They will destroy all history they don't agree with.
Some facts the current pack of “Progressives” want you to forget.
1: Slavery in Africa was an entire Black African business. Slaves were captured in tribal wars and then sold. Whites were only involved in shipping them. Slave importation was banned in 1807, early in our country’s history.
2: The U.S. was a minor destination for slave ships. Most went to Central and South America. The first shipload of African captives to North America arrived at Jamestown, Virginia, in August 1619, but for most of the 17th century, white European indentured servants were far more numerous in the North American British colonies than were African slaves.
3; There were many Black Freemen in the South who owned slaves, and in the main, treated them horribly.
4: There were Black officers in the Confederate army, and whites willingly served under them.
5: Cinque, the slave hero of the movie “Amistad” was freed here, made a good living as a lecturer in the North, then returned to his native Africa, where he died as a very rich slave trader.
6: American Black tourists going to West Africa expect to be treated as “returning Bothers.’ In reality, they are treated with great disdain. They are told, “You are the child of slaves; we are the children of Warrior Kings.” Many flee resorts in Ghana or the Ivory Coast after 2 or 3 days. Airlines and hotels have unwritten rules that they will let these tourists change and cancel reservations without penalty.
Slavery was a horrible problem. The current state of the Black Experience in America has little to do with slavery and is all caused by choices all too many Black people make early in their lives.
As just one example, many Black first graders in public schools are told by their older siblings to refuse to learn how to read, because reading is a “White thing.”
re: Mt. Rushmore.
There is already a movement to place Obama there as #5.
Yep. They have re-written their history for years.
