In my mom’s city neighborhood a BP gas station went out of business. A small building on a lot with parking for maybe eight cars. Somebody bought it and turned it into a tobacco and vape shop.
The local busybodies and control freak politicians voiced their displeasure. That was not a valuable addition to the neighborhood. Plus, it brought with it the EEEEEEEVILS of smoking! This surely could NOT stand!!
They actually mounted a campaign to get them to leave and to put another business there. Most of the busybodies wanted Quaker Steak and Lube...a regional wings and ribs chain. On a lot with parking for eight cars? RIIIIIIIIGHT!
Another bozo wanted the city to evict a small computer business from an old theater (which they OWNED) because he thought it would be “better for the community” to restore that theater and show movies there.
News flash....the theater that was originally on that site went out of business in 1952! Any theater that can’t hack competition from the Dumont Network doesn’t need to be there.
I was at a local city council meeting and the topic of land use/business permits came up. One of the city councilwomen decided it was time to ask a question about similar businesses being permitted by the city located within the same strip mall 2 doors down from each other. In this case they were both Chinese restaurants. She asked how the city could allow that to happen.
Being the Public Works Director at the time I responded that it was not up to the city to tell to competing businesses where to locate and that the owners chose those locations based upon the old axiom “location, location, location”, and that the property was zoned for that type of development. Eventually they both went out of business at no fault from the city.
Really, who wants to shoplift at Dollar Tree? That junk cannot be traded for drugs, Yo.
Agree. The free market will render a verdict on whether there are too many dollar stores in that area. Can’t believe an elected.official in a major city doesn’t understand the basic economic concept involved. And who is he to decree whether there are too many such stores in his area???
Cant believe an elected.official in a major city doesnt understand the basic economic concept involved.
Or he’s a blithering idiot - but I’m betting on the former.
Did he speak out against the liquor stores, tattoo parlors and bars too?
Nope.
They pay their “bills”.
Why would the gibsmedats want a Dollar Tree? Dollar Tree doesn’t have flat screen TVs or Smart Phones that can be looted.
There... Fixed.
"Dollar stores are fine, but we have a half-dozen in the local area. At some point, you have too many of something," he said.
Who the Hell are you to decide how many dollar stores should in a particular area? Get over yourself!
The other reason is that he was not consulted by the property owner about the plan.
In other words, the store owner did not kiss your ring and pay the protection money.
The best thing for the people of Illinois would be for Chicago to be disbanded and equal parts given to neighboring localities.
Post of the day!
