Dollar Tree dissed by alderman
Chicago Tribune ^ | June 24, 2015 | By Steve Metsch

Chicago's 19th Ward is getting a new retail store, but Ald. Matt O'Shea is not happy about it.

So much so that he's suggesting that residents not shop there.

Dollar Tree, a discount chain with more than 4,400 stores in 48 states, is taking over a former grocery store at 10601 Pulaski Road.

O'Shea is upset for two reasons. One is that he sees no need for another dollar store on the Southwest Side.

"Dollar stores are fine, but we have a half-dozen in the local area. At some point, you have too many of something," he said.

The other reason is that he was not consulted by the property owner about the plan. And in Chicago, not talking with an alderman before inking a deal can be a political pratfall.

When Seneca Real Estate Development, the property owner, contacted his office about Dollar Tree, O'Shea asked to talk to them about other options "because when I spoke to residents in the area, they didn't want a dollar store." But he said that discussion never happened. . .

In Chicagoland, "consulted" = given a suitcase full of hundred dollar bills.

Sounds like either Dollar Tree or their landlord did not cough-up the customary kickback to the alderman.

I was going to post that comment.
I find that simply hilarious... and very scary.

I’ve seen no evidence to support her claim that anyone “dresses up” to go to WalMart. When I was a kid in the 60s, my mom used to sit in the car and send me in to pay bills at the phone company, power company, etc. just so she wouldn’t have to go through the drill of really getting dressed up to go downtown.

Sounds like a communist “planner”.

One store and a line for coffee is all the little people need.

Note to O’Shea: You are not God. The market will decide. i.e. Opinions vary. Thanks sooooo much for sharing yours!

My mom wore gloves and a hat if we left the neighborhood and we were NOT upper middle class.

What that means is that Matt O'Shea didn't bet a big enough slice of the graft pie.

Could be that he is upset because he did not get a kickback [bribe].

Yep. It’s how free markets work, though we have not really had that for some time.

....”The market will decide”...

We have three in our small city, two which arrived shortly after 2008 crisis.....because when things are bad everybody shops the Dollar Stores. Ours were going strong then and people of all economic levels were shopping there.

They may be very glad they have them as the future doesn’t look so hot for typical retail chains.

Like gangbangers? Like aldermen who take bribes and tip off the gangbangers to planned police raids?
