An activist group is calling for Orlando (Florida) to remove a monument to Confederate soldiers from Lake Eola Park, amid nationwide scrutiny for the Civil War South's symbols after the racially-motivated slayings at a South Carolina church last week.
The petition by Organize Now, an equal-justice group, calls for the statue to be relocated to a museum, "where such an oppressive image of racist American culture would be appropriately housed for historical reference."
As of about 9 a.m. Wednesday, only about 100 people had signed the petition. Heather Fagan, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer's deputy chief of staff, said in a statement the mayor's office is "exploring options for the future of" the statue.
"We pride ourselves in being a diverse and inclusive community and value the concern raised by a citizen regarding the statue that has been in Lake Eola for nearly 100 years," the statement said. . .

It never occurred to me that anybody would consider that I was being serious. You proved me wrong.
Why don’t we cut to the chase and erase all of America’s history in one fell swoop? Get it over with.
Then in school textbooks they’ll only need one page to say that America’s history is riddled with racism, bigotry, sexism, homophobia, religious nutjobs, LGBT intolerance, and imperialists.

What about the Confederate monuments at Gettysburg, and all the other Civil War battlefields.
Many of the soldiers in the Confederacy were drafted. This fact needs to be pointed out before monuments honoring them are taken down.

And few of them owned slaves. Less than 5 percent of Southerners were slave owners. Seventy-five percent of Southerners had no immediate economic interest in the maintenance of slavery or the plantation system.
