Years ago I read a summary of a study—I think by University of Oklahoma—arguing that a person’s communication skills correlated with his likelihood of being incarcerated. At the time I was working as a counselor in a medium security prison. A black inmate, when passing me in the hallways, would sometimes begin talking in the manner of an educated white man to mock me. I would reply that if he talked like then when he was arrested he may have talked his way out of going to the pen.
