Incorrect in the very first sentence. Five Northern states permitted slavery too, but they didn't have to fight a war.
No, the Civil war was fought to stop independence from Washington D.C. The abolition of slavery was not adopted as a goal of the War until over a year after the war had already been started.
Lincoln was going to allow slavery to continue in the South, so it's hard to argue the war was fought because of the evils of slavery. Apparently it was not considered so evil by Lincoln that he wasn't willing to work a deal to allow it to continue.
People have just been taught history that makes them feel good, as opposed to being taught the unpleasant truth.

They went all the way from being asylum inmates in the 1950s to being a protected class in 2015. They took power one step at a time.
The war was not primarily about slavery. It was based on states rights as the next one is shaping up to be. Slavery was just the match to the fuel.
It is an amazing sight to behold. People who think they are smart, acting no smarter than trained seals.
Slavery was a bad thing. But the Confederacy was a JUST CAUSE because it asserted the right of states to be sovereign and make their own decisions — including about how various groups should be treated.
It won’t be long before a new secessionist movement rises us and states start splitting off. When it happens, we’ll need patriots willing to stand up for it.
