Capitol Hill Buzz: Meryl Streep asks Congress to revive ERA

No actor or actress can match Meryl Streep’s 19 Academy Award nominations, and only Katharine Hepburn has bested her three Oscars for acting. So maybe it’s conceivable that Streep’s letter Tuesday to each member of Congress can somehow revive the Equal Rights Amendment, politically dormant since its high-water mark four decades ago.

“I am writing to ask you to stand up for equality—for your mother, your daughter, your sister, your wife or yourself—by actively supporting the Equal Rights Amendment,” Streep writes. Each packet includes a copy of “Equal Means Equal,” a book by Jessica Neuwirth, president of the ERA Coalition.

Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972. Over the next decade, 35 states ratified it, three short of the 38 needed to add it to the Constitution. …

The amendment has USSR-like language in it.
Women in the U.S.S.R. are accorded equal rights with men in all spheres of economic, state, cultural, social and political life. The possibility of exercising these rights is ensured to women by granting them an equal right with men to work, payment for work, rest and leisure, social insurance and education, and by state protection of the interests of mother and child, pre-maternity and maternity leave with full pay, and the provision of a wide network of maternity homes, nurseries and kindergartens.

1936 USSR Constitution, Article 122

Women and men have equal rights in the USSR. Exercise of these rights is ensured by according women equal access with men to education and vocational and professional training, equal opportunities in employment, remuneration, and promotion, and in social and political, and cultural activity, and by special labour and health protection measures for women; by providing conditions enabling mothers to work; by legal protection, and material and moral support for mothers and children, including paid leaves and other benefits for expectant mothers and mothers, and gradual reduction of working time for mothers with small children.

1977 USSR Constitution, Article 35

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

Text of ERA
The resemblance, in spite of brevity, is just too close. And with Congress surrendering legislative powers to the executive (unconstitutionally), the ramifications in terms of “legislation” with respect to the ERA are too dangerous to contemplate.

Duh; Doesn’t the Constitution already support equal rights?

This is a sign of desperation.

The aging feminists are trying to rally the troops to get them all fired up to vote for Hillary!

With the ending of the age of Obamunism, all the liberals have is Hillary! and Bernie Sanders. Truly pathetic.

The Fourteenth Amendment was supposed to do this, yes? Never mind the Bill of Rights before that.

But the ERA wanted (and wants) to make things more Soviet-like, like I pointed out.

In other words, Streep wants women to have everything men have, and 20% more because they are women.

Insanity.

She also wants government-granted rights versus natural rights, clearly.

I do believe you have shrunk it down to the level that even Hollywood can understand.

Is your objection to the ERA language to Section 1, 2, or 3, or some or all. Now lets turn Section 1 around and word it thus: “Equality of rights under the law SHALL be denied or abridged by the Country on account of Female sex, as willed by Allah and Sharia Law.

In other words to avoid even a hint of USSR-like language in it, Sharia like language would have to be substituted. Frankly, I don’t appreciate the status quo which means I am only likely to earn 70 to 80% of what a man does for equal work. Furthermore, some work places are moving in the direction of giving men equal rights to take time off to care for their families and sick wives.

They should do this because an impersonator asks them to?

What does Rachel Dolezal think?

It’s a little narcissistic if you ask me. She promotes this to retain some sense of notoriety and fame that is most certainly fleeing from her.

Frankly, I never could understand what all the fuss was about her. To me she looks like the proverbial shrew and all round bitch. If I had a worst nightmare image for an ex-wife, she’d be it.

Not how the feminists define equal rights. In their minds, women earning the same pay for working less hours than men is equal rights.

Streep just spent a lot of time in the White house with the MOOCH for a Magazine....can’t remember the name of it....so this is all the MOOCH’s idea.

The time for ratification of the ERA was to have expired in 1979, then was extended to 1982; even then, it did not the support of the required 38 states. Therefore, I suspect it would need to be re-introduced and receive the support of 2/3 of both houses of Congress. Not likely.

Some equality would be nice, thanks Merrill.

We can start with insurance rates - equal premiums in auto and life policies.

No more ‘ladies night’ w/o corresponding ‘mens night’ in bars and clubs.

Colleges and Universities are disproportionally represented (a decidedly leftist term) by females; affirmative action for males needed.

Banks, pharmacies, doctors offices, public schools, the tv news outlets, and government are dominated to a very large degree with women - let’s move aside girls; make room for more males. It’s the right thing to do.

Whadda ya say we get male sports reporters to venture into the WNBA; LPGA locker rooms? Equal time! Equal access!

I agree with Ms. Streep - this is a shamefully sexist society.

Streep is the world's worst actress. She is the poster child for the modern paradigm of the successful self-promoter with no discernible talent.

As Dorothy Parker famously said of Katherine Hepburn, "She runs the gamut of emotions from A to B." Her acting consists of crying and her nose turning red.

It's been great not seeing her movies all these years. Just think of the dogs I missed: Rendition, Lions for Lambs, It's Complicated, Hope Springs, August: Osage County, The Homesman, The Giver and, finally, the world's most tuneless musical, Into The Woods. What a list of losers!
