A park in Baltimore. A statue at a university campus in Texas. An entire Southern state’s flag. These seemingly disparate items scattered across the United States have long been bound together by their enduring ties to the Confederacy — and the feelings of shame, embarrassment, and hurt such ties have in turn prompted in many people.
Then last week, nine black people were gunned down inside the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, allegedly by a 21-year-old white man who appears to have a history of using Confederate symbols to espouse racist hate.
After days of grief and soul-searching in her state, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley called Monday for the Confederate flag to be removed from state Capitol grounds. Her decision, though, has been felt across the country and represents a watershed moment that is providing unprecedented momentum in the effort to remove symbols of the Confederacy from American public life.
“The [Confederate] flag has always had such an ugly past and an ugly history. None of this is new. It’s just the mindset of the people in the South that’s changing,” Mississippi State Sen. Kenneth Wayne Jones told BuzzFeed News on Monday. “But I think the time is now to change our flag.”
Although seven Southern state flags contain symbols associated with the Confederacy, Mississippi’s is by far the most obvious. The state flag, which was adopted in 1894, features the iconic Confederate battle flag in its upper left corner. In a 2001 referendum, voters overwhelmingly elected to retain the divisive symbol, which for many people, especially African-Americans, is seen as a pro-slavery emblem.
“It’s a problem for every African-American in Mississippi that that is what’s flying over our state,” said Jones, who is also the chair of the state legislative black caucus....

Did I miss this? I saw him wearing the apartheid-era flags of South Africa and Rhodesia, and burn the American flag. He did not say a word about the South or Confederacy in his 'manifesto'.

With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.
My Guess is that BroBama never took these words to heart.
Haley calls herself “pro-life.” Since the Union currently imposes legal abortion on all the states, why didn’t Haley call for the banishment of the hateful Union flag?
Amazing.
Frankly as soon as we make the break the better I will feel about it. Who needs the Democratic Socialist States of the NE around anyhow? Just do it. Secede.
Sort of like trying to undo a scrambled egg.
Obama will remind us of our innate racism that is incurable. He used words like “revenge” and ‘punish’ in regard to voting for Democrats as if the opposition had committed grave sins for which there is no redemption.
These actions are designed to divide the once ‘United’ States and it’s working very well.
Just so you know, the Confederacy was defeated and does not exist anymore. Work with the reality!
Confederate money could still eventually exceed the value of the US Dollar.

There are differing degrees of fools. This guy has just created a new one.
I thought you were fixin’ to say the United States was defeated in Korea; defeated in Vietnam; defeated in Cambodia; defeated in Iraq; and is being defeated in Afghanistan - and that under Rat and Rino leadership the United States that we once knew does not exist anymore. I thought that was what you were fixin’ to say.
Ban the flag then Ban all Confederate monuments—dig up Robert E. Lees bones and throw them into the ocean. Ban all images of the Rebel Flag! Ban talking about the Civil War—change the name of the conflict to the “Slave War” That was the only important issue—pull down the grave stones of the CSA veterans—use them to build a monument to Rosa Parks and Rev. Sharpton. Where does this stop——it doesn’t.
