BTW, I’m not Roman Catholic. I’m United Methodist.

--- At a minimum, it suggests he’s not a careful thinker...certainly not a speaker who thinks well on his feet. That’s really surprising given he’s a lifelong priest. ---

It's very distressing, especially when comparing his public statements against those of the previous pope.

Either he isn't circumspect in his speech or he is intellectually lazy. Intellectual acuity and prudence are vital to the papacy in the era of the internet.

God will bring good out of this somehow, even if we don't live to see it.

>>>Catholics, however, seem to maintain their US numbers, if for no other reason than because of their higher birth rate.

Let's not kid ourselves. The ONLY reason the Catholic Church in America are maintaining it's numbers is because of illegal immigration and the fact that the 10's of millions that are here illegally are Catholic.

There are a lot of Catholics in this country...but the number who are cultural Catholics...who never attend mass....who only show up at weddings, funerals, Christmas and Easter...is at an all time high. They identify as Catholic but you would not know it if you checked their schedule.

And THIS is not just a Catholic problem. This is the state of religion in America. ~80% of the country identifies itself as Christian....but they are not. They are cultural Christians...CINOs (Christians in Name Only). They are no more Christian than Obama.

Calling yourself a Christian doesn't make you one...just like calling yourself a woman when your Bruce Jenner doesn't make you a woman. Going to Church or Mass doesn't make you a Christian either, just like going to a doughnut shop doesn't make you a cop (ok...cheap shot).

Agreed. No need to invoke conspiracy theory, in spite of the fact that the former Cardinal Bergoglio was certainly a left-of-center Latino liberation theologian.

Specifically, I think the best explanation for his recent erratic behavior is that the Holy Father now is just an old man in the early-to-mid stages of senility.

(I say this after watching/hearing his statements last week and this morning on Italian TV, without "voice over" translations by professionally articulate English speakers. And by the way, his statements on "climate change" and armaments were not his only foolhardy pronouncements in recent days. His words last week on the current immigrant invasion of Italy were equally bizarre, IMO.)

He’s at least a confused life long inhabitant of a socialist country where the government has managed to paint capitalists as the reason there is income inequality, etc. He has bought into it, hook line and sinker it would appear.

His arguments are much like you’ll hear on MSNBC or see at Huffington Post or Salon or Slate.

Good point.

Are South Americans completely ignorant of Chile's economic turnaround since their Friedman-inspired reforms?

It’s possible that illegals swell the ranks of the Catholic Church. I’ll not discount that. It’s a viable idea that needs to be fleshed out. However, the birth rate idea is also true. It’s one reason the Islamic states are going to bury Europe.

Yes, but elderly Jesuits aren’t always immune from mental deterioration.

So Holy Father, if good Christians had not manufactured arms in the 1930s how would they have opposed the Nazis or should they have just sung kumbaya as they marched to the gas chambers?

Well, yeah, of course. I won't dispute for one second that he's dedicated to liberation theology and associated false doctrines. But AFAIAC, that dedication doesn't explain his recent erratic and bizarre statements:

No, when I've seen him over the past week on Italian TV, listening to him in the original Italian, I've had a strong impression of a fumbling, mumbling and bumbling old guy -- not at all like the super-glib, self-assured, cagey and bombastic leftists you'll normally find at MSNBC and similar outposts of statism.

Put another way, I think that if Bergoglio still were no more than a standard-issue Jesuit Latino left-winger, his recent public pronouncements would at least have had an air of faux cogency and circumspection -- qualities that seem altogether missing nowadays.

Okay, I’ll grant you the argument on the “style” and poise of the interviews...but the reasoning, the logic, is very MSNBC like.

‘Pope Francis needs to pull out of his recent tailspin before he becomes an international laughingstock.”

Too late, way too late.

The weapons piece. I read the address at the Salesians, but can’t find the one where he makes the statements about weapons, which is being reported.

Sounds like they were extemporaneous. We’ll have to await a transcription, apparently.

I don't see evidence of senility, but clearly he has faulty judgment based on an insulated ideological bias. His grasp of the real world outside his parochial windows is severely defective.
