‘End Austerity Now,’ demand Britons

End austerity: it’s cheating us all; Jobs not Trident; No cuts; Defy Tory rule; Cut war not welfare; Stop fracking; a Living Wage for mothers; and, The Pope gets it, why can’t you? With the slogans emblazoned on banners, posters and flags, anti-austerity marchers shouted slogans, sang, and beat drums, as they walked through London in what is being called the biggest protest march that the city has seen.

The ‘End Austerity Now’ demonstration saw participation by an estimated crowd of between 70,000 and 250,000, all coming together to protest against cuts imposed due to austerity, the threats to the National Health Service, the privatisation of public services and Tory economic policy.

Called by the Peoples Assembly against Austerity, an umbrella organisation that has united unions, church groups, citizen organisations, charities and others, the march was addressed by union leaders, politicians and celebrities, all of them calling for the end to the welfare cuts that the Conservative government has announced it will be making.

Amongst those who addressed the gathering at Parliament Square were Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness; Coronation Street actor Julie Hesmondhalgh; Labour leadership hopeful Jeremy Corbyn; general secretary of the Unite union Len McCluskey; Green Party MP Caroline Lucas; comedian Russell Brand; singer Charlotte Church; national secretary of the People’s Assembly Against Austerity Sam Fairbairn; and Lindsey German from Stop The War Coalition.

This was the most succinct of the many articles I saw on this march by all the usual suspects. Their knickers are in a twist over the recent UK election. If you want pictures, see http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3132645/Russell-Brand-Charlotte-Church-join-thousands-march.html. Since there are a number of photos of Russell Brand (who says it is his fault that the Tories won) be sure to have a barf bag handy.

Why not $100/hour? How about giving everyone a million dollars, that is just easier, that way everyone will be “rich.” See how that works.

They should simply print 100 billion £20 notes and mail a small bundle to each household in Britain. Then, when bread costs £30/loaf and beer is unobtainable, they can issue each Briton three credits for Econ 101

All the refugees coming from Africa and middle east head to England for the best welfare. If the Britons just took care of its own citizens, that wouldn’t have to have austerity.

Smoke control areas: the rules

Many parts of the UK are smoke control areas where you can’t emit smoke from a chimney unless you’re burning an authorised fuel or using exempt appliances, eg burners or stoves

You can be fined up to £1,000 if you break the rules.

Find out if you live in a smoke control area

Contact your local council to see if you live in a smoke control area. The environmental services department will be able to help you.

Bank of England notes are specifically not on the approved smokeless fuel list, so you can only burn them in an outdoor barbecues or garden bonfire to keep warm and not in an indoor fireplace or furnace if you live in a smoke control area.
