Goodnight, California

I offer another chronicle, a 14-hour tour of the skeleton I once knew as California...[Snip]...I turn on the local news and channel surf for 10 minutes. How well we take refuge in the absurd. This litany blares out: Bruce Jenner’s new sexual identity, the latest racial controversy, this time over the crashing of a private pool party and the police reaction, the Obama’s new stretch Air Force One jumbo jet, Marco Rubio’s one ticket every four years, Miley Cyrus’s bisexuality. I suppose if one cannot grasp, much less deal with, $19 trillion in debt, a foreign policy in shambles, the largest state in the union on the cusp of a disastrous drought, a Potemkin health care system, zero interest on passbook savings, and the end of all federal immigration law, then the trivial must become existential.

Goodnight, once great state…

... why is it that four or five men always seem to be standing around one who is working?

Unions.

Unions?

You bet, there are more unionized government employees in CA than exists in private sector CA...

Like much of the U.S. now, Californians are forced to pay the salaries and gold plated benefits/pensions for these union members.

Here in suburban Charlotte, we often run into retired government employees from Up North, people who retired in their 50s with generous pensions and full medical coverage.

Unfortunately for us, they tend to continue voting Democrat.

Half probably don’t even vote. They got theirs for life.

Methinks all of that money that Jerry wants to spend on that train to nowhere could be better spent on a pipeline or desalinization plant

Note to V D H:

Time for you to read or re-read Atlas Shrugged....... I haven’t done so in about 3 years.. The next time will be my 15th time thru the book. I always get something new from each reading.

And when they cry about needing more money or they will have to lay off teachers and police officers, it’s because they need more money to pay pensions. I used to work for a PEU in CA, an eye opening experience.

Too bad to see what’s happening with the state. I was born and raised in, my opinion, the most beautiful part of the country. South Lake Tahoe. I went to school in Fresno. I moved out of Cali 15 years ago and started my own business. I would love to be back in the Sierra Nevadas but the last thing that state wants is a white business owner.

I go to the stores here and I REFUSE to buy a bag:

I have to carry all my grocery items, sorta like a Medieval European minstrel peasant guy from Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail, with stuff hanging off me and tumbling out of my arms.

Many, many guns you can’t buy here.

Most people don’t know that on LA County beaches it’s $100 fine for throwing a football or frisbee (dangerous).

Can't toss a frisbee at the beach? Blasphemy!

We might be better off cutting our losses and just giving California to Mexico. But be sure to put up a good stout fence around it.

Ruger finally decided the CA market wasn't worth shackling their product line. The Ruger LC9s is a fine product without a loaded chamber indicator. Lower price. More competitive in the market. Can't be sold in CA. The primary motivation was the microstamping requirement. It's not a viable technology. No point in pursuing a market that requires it. CA believed their market was too big to ignore. Anything they demanded would be ceded by the firearms manufacturers. They were wrong.

I had a 5 year hiatus in range time and reloading while working that contract in San Diego. I'm back home in Idaho and making up for lost time. The indoor range in Idaho Falls just acquired an M2 50 BMG. You can rent it and fire it inside the range. My local indoor range is limited to handguns and .223. Outdoor...anything you want with a 500 yd max.

Check out the website for Guns n Gear. It's a 50 mile ride from my location, but seems to have some excellent facilities.
