Hawaiis governor has signed a bill to make his state the first to raise the legal smoking age to 21.
The measure aims to prevent adolescents from smoking, buying or possessing both traditional and electronic cigarettes. Gov. David Ige signed it into law Friday.
Dozens of local governments have similar bans, including Hawaii County and New York City.
Raising the minimum age as part of our comprehensive tobacco control efforts will help reduce tobacco use among our youth and increase the likelihood that our keiki will grow up tobacco-free, said Ige, using the Hawaiian word for children.
In Hawaii, 86 percent of adult smokers began smoking before age 21, according to the governors office.

“The do gooders never run out of things to control for the rubes they hate so much.”
Yup, and that goes double for guns!
Soon they’ll figure out that murder and rape can be eliminated, just pass a law.
“So, all the seaman, airman and soldiers on the Islands cant smoke? What is the legal drinking age in Hawaii?”
I guess they will be confined to whatever base to which they are assigned if they want to do those things. i don’t think state laws apply to military facilities. Kinda like Indian Reservations
Have been listening to 70’s music on youtube all day while I do my design work. I read the comments by kids who like the music of the 70’s better than their current crop.
If they only knew that in the 70’s in Hawaii we could drink at 18 and we had Waikiki! Too bad they missed out on a great era of music, dance and discos that were open until 4am. About the pakalolo, never partook, it was the scent in the air along with fragrant plumeria and mangoes ripening on the lawn.
The voting age used to be 21, Dems lowered it to include school children.
Yeah, it was lowered in the 60’s because of all the whining about drafting kids into the military at 18 during the vietnam war.
