Combat Ship Christened for Former Congresswoman, Gun-Control Advocate Giffords

The Defense Department is naming a combat ship after former congresswoman and gun-control advocate Gabrille Giffords this weekend.

Giffords was shot in the head at a constituent meet and greet during her third term. She resigned from Congress in 2012 to focus on her recovery, and started a gun-control PAC called Americans for Responsible Solutions in 2013. She and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, have also advocated for gun-control measures in congressional testimony.

The Navy’s tenth littoral combat ship will be christened USS Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday in Mobile, Ala.

“The christening of the future USS Gabrielle Giffords marks the beginning of what is certain to be a long life for this great ship,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus in a statement. “It is also a celebration of the skill and dedication of the men and women who have built LCS 10 and the courage of her namesake. This ship truly embodies the Navy motto of Semper Fortis – Always Courageous.”

Giffords has not served in the military. Her husband is a retired Navy captain.

Jill Biden will be the one smashing a bottle of champagne across the bow during the ceremony.

Designed to operate in shallow coastal waters at speeds that can exceed 40 knots, the LCS is armed with 57mm and .50 caliber guns as well as Hellfire missiles.

Other LCS are named Freedom, Fort Worth, Independence, and Coronado. LCS under construction or in the pre-production stages have all been named after U.S. cities.

Is that the one that had the extra chamber added to it midway? I guess that was the only way to make up for the unfortunate name.

“The ship won’t get any attention until someone shoots at it.”

Then the skipper resigns his/her/its commission and becomes an international arms control “activist”.

Carter was not a good president but unlike Slick Willy and the Obamanation of Desolation I don’t think he hated his country. As he was a submariner I have no issue with a submarine being named after him

“Jill Biden will be the one smashing a bottle of champagne across the bow during the ceremony.”

The public should be outraged, EPA and the Audobon Society should go beserk. Smashing bottles of champagne on the bow of ships needs to be BANNED IMMEDIATELY.

First, a valuable resource (champagne doesn’t grow on trees, you know) is being wasted.

Second, think of all the glass that keeps being deposited on the ocean floor. All that sharp glass could cause injuries. Not just to humans, but to flora and fauna.

Third, smashing a bottle is pretty much a VIOLENT ACT. All violent actions should be illegal.

: )

A perfect example to show how far AMERICA has fallen into the sewer. I guess it won’t be long before we see the USS Homer Simpson.

No doubt. Did they paint it pink and put a 500cc engine in it too? Didn’t the top Naval commander say if it floats it fights? Did they fire that one and hire a Barbie Doll?

It’s sad. What happened to naming ships after heroes, like Mitscher, John Paul Jones, The Sullivans, etc.?

Now we name them after Giffords and Murtha.

No doubt the ship will fly the LGBT rainbow flag of the Usurper Obama’s military.

It has guns aboard?

Oh my..

The least the Navy could do is make it an ammo free combat ship..
