The article is peppered with witness use of assault rifle. I doubt if a marine would use the term and doubt if a naval officer would use the term.

They used a word not in the style manual that the writer replaced with assault

I think a lot of these “reports” are written by people who don’t know the difference between auto and semi-auto fire, and don’t know that handguns fire semi as well as rifles. Some of the confusion comes from the term “Auto-loader”. They don’t understand that that doesn’t mean auto fire.

Mac 9’s are fast little buggers, semi,with 30 rd mags, but are still pistols. I never heard one called an assault pistol.

I can’t imagine how anyone figured unleashing automatic fire from rifles in a busy urban area was a good idea. If the shooter was prone and aiming up at center mass, the misses could travel a mile or more. Could have dropped a couple of moms buying diapers in any retail stores in the background.
