The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday turned back a demand from Congress that Americans born in Jerusalem be allowed to have their passports changed to reflect Israel as their birthplace, heeding a warning from the State Department a simple passport alteration could provoke uproar throughout the Arab and Muslim world,

So I’m just spit balling here but Roberts is what? the reincarnation of a not-dead-yet David Souter?
[So Im just spit balling here but Roberts is what?]
DOA when it comes to standing on Truth.
Why would peaceful Muslims have an uproar, wouldn’t that be unpeaceful?
What if they are born in Tel Aviv?
When did we become a country that fears it’s enemies?
America’s highest court has officially not recognized Jerusalem as part of Israel. They have spit in God’s eye.
Woe to America.
Just the latest example that terrorism, or in this case simply the threat, works.
If it was so important, why didn’t George Bush follow the law? He signed it.
It’s not about the Arab world, it’s fear of Islam. Plain and simple. Bunch of cowards too afraid to call Jerusalem the capitol of Israel
[Bunch of cowards too afraid to call Jerusalem the capitol of Israel]
They should fear the LORD, not the Arabs.
It’s my understanding this matter arose during Dubya’s term in office.
I can’t for the life of me understand the hypocrisy of a president not recognizing Israel as a country on a US Passport, when nearly all international governments have recognized Israel as a country.
Israeli patents, Olympic atheletes, airline, etc.
Exact land boundaries of Israel may still be in dispute, however they became a country in 1948.
What the hell are we doing appeasing delusional Muslims by supporting their contention?
Our betrayal of Israel is playing out in real time.
But they fear man more than they fear God
We need to stop worrying about triggering an “uproar throughout the Arab and Muslim world”. When people can burn an embassy or consulate over an Internet movie (okay, that was a lie, but America’s enemies used that lie because it was believable), commit mass murder over a cartoon, or freak out over whether they got a can of Coke or just a cup on the airplane, it’s time to stop worrying about what normal people do that might provoke them. Once professional victim groups see the profit in freaking out, trying to accommodate them even more merely adds to their instability.
Fill in the passports correctly: “Born in Israel”.
High on any American’s list of “Who Gives a Sh*t” issues.
Israel is recognized by the U.S. and on U.S. passports. The case dealt with whether Jerusalem is recognized as being part of Israel, so that those born in Jerusalem could cite Israel as their nation of birth. No U.S. presidential administration has recognized Jerusalem as such, and the Supreme Court affirmed that Congress does not have the power to unilaterally change that policy, since the executive branch sets U.S. foreign policy.
Sandra Day O’Kennedy strikes again! Joined by Breyer, Kagan Sotomayor, Thomas, and Ginsburg. Thomas and, maybe, Breyer should know beter.
In 2008.
“Both Israelis and Palestinians want Jerusalem as their capital. USA Today said the issue arose when Congress in 2002 allowed citizens born in Jerusalem to designate Israel as their home country.”
“President George W. Bush declined to follow that, and President Obama followed in his footsteps.”
It’s not the same thing today as it was back in 2002 as the situation, with the attacks from Hamas, has changed for Israel and it is more important that Obama move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel.

Probably the correct decision. However Congress could pass the same legislation providing for financial penalties should State not act, as in the Jerusalem Embassy Act. Could add it to the new pending bill which removes the Presidential waiver. Related threads
